This issue was caught during internal testing and did not affect any customer repositories. Per-language bundles support analysis for a single language and are therefore smaller than the combined bundles that allow analysis for all supported languages. As a result, per-language bundles take up less space on disk and are faster to download. Address host/target choosing different versions in the x-update-baseline diff (#2151)
Inserting vcpkg-tool 2026-09-26 into Visual Studio caused @sean-mcmanus 's GPT 6 Sol code review bot to re-review some previous changes. It said: > ✨Copilot (agent227): [Minor] The new x-update-baseline diff output in [vcpkg-tool PR 2057](https://github.com/microsoft/vcpkg-tool/pull/2057) builds its [version snapshot](https://github.com/microsoft/vcpkg-tool/blob/51bf87ca6e9bf3e622d84ff323bd202ab1ca0c0b/src/vcpkg/commands.update-baseline.cpp#L63-L81) with versions.emplace(action.spec.name(), ...), so a host and target action for the same port collapse to whichever entry is visited first. The versioned planner supports both specs in one action plan (see its [host-tool test](https://github.com/microsoft/vcpkg-tool/blob/51bf87ca6e9bf3e622d84ff323bd202ab1ca0c0b/src/vcpkg-test/dependencies.cpp#L2083-L2159) ) and resolves their version constraints separately. If only the discarded triplet's selected version changes on an update, the command can print There were no changes in the ports. despite a real dependency-version change. Could the snapshot key/report include the triplet when both variants are present? This is a reporting issue; the baseline update itself remains intact. Addressing this is the majority of this change: if host/target triplet diverge on selected version, we now print the whole spec rather than just the port version. I would normally describe the edge cases handled here, but I think the unit tests added in src/vcpkg-test/commands.update-baseline.cpp are a better place to start. > ✨Copilot (agent227): [Minor] The bundled release adds O_CLOEXEC to the POSIX lock handle, but [its new regression test](https://github.com/microsoft/vcpkg-tool/blob/51bf87ca6e9bf3e622d84ff323bd202ab1ca0c0b/src/vcpkg-test/files.cpp#L1141-L1177) calls lock.reset() before attempting the second lock. That destructor explicitly calls [flock(LOCK_UN)](https://github.com/microsoft/vcpkg-tool/blob/51bf87ca6e9bf3e622d84ff323bd202ab1ca0c0b/src/vcpkg/base/files.cpp#L4273-L4280) , releasing the shared open-file-description lock even when the exec'd child inherited the descriptor. I reproduced the second acquisition succeeding both with and without close-on-exec, so the test would pass after removing the production flag. Could the test let the lock-owning parent exit without explicitly unlocking while the exec'd child is still alive, then check acquisition from a separate process? That would actually protect the file-lock fix in this release. This test was a sticking point back in the review; as far as I can tell because the actual lock object is inherited by the child process there's no way to close our copy without also closing the child's copy. All suggestions to test this better go WAY out of contract trying to add stuff to cough up the `fd` and similar which I do not want to do, so I just deleted the meaningless test. --------- Co-authored-by: Copilot <223556219+Copilot@users.noreply.github.com> |

Gracefully fallback to WinNET proxy settings when HTTPS_PROXY/NO_PROXY are malformed (#2137)
Addresses #2130. Preserves the bootstrap helper's existing HTTPS_PROXY and NO_PROXY handling. If WinHttpOpen rejects the configuration with ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER (87), the helper warns and retries using the current user's explicit WinNET proxy settings, or a direct connection if none is configured. Validated debug and release builds, focused error-handling regressions, actual proxy routing and redirects, and 11 container scenarios covering 10 successful signed downloads and one expected connection failure. --------- Co-authored-by: Camille Bruckmann <cbruckmann@microsoft.com> Co-authored-by: Copilot App <223556219+Copilot@users.noreply.github.com> Co-authored-by: Copilot Autofix powered by AI <175728472+Copilot@users.noreply.github.com>2026-09-26 |

That seems reasonable so let's give it a shot. |

Make binary cache ZIP compression level configurable (#2125)
Adds `--binary-cache-compression-level=<0-9>` and `VCPKG_BINARY_CACHE_COMPRESSION_LEVEL` so users can trade archive size for binary-cache submission time. The command-line option takes precedence; leaving both unset preserves the archive tool's default compression level. Invalid values are rejected with a localized diagnostic. The common ZIP creation path passes the configured level to 7-Zip (`-mx=<level>`) on Windows and `zip` (`-<level>`) elsewhere, covering every binary-cache provider that requests a ZIP archive. 7-Zip explicitly uses `-tzip` regardless of whether a level is configured. NuGet packaging is unaffected, and changing the setting does not change package ABIs or prevent restoration of existing archives. Tests cover defaults, every configured level, argument validation and precedence, and one cache-only restoration using `--only-binarycaching` with a different compression setting and an exact payload comparison. The test harness isolates the new environment variable. Reuses the existing `vcpkg-header-only` test port. The temporary `ci.ps1` output-capture workaround has been removed after merging upstream's fix from #2127; `ci.ps1` now matches upstream main. Documentation: https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/vcpkg-docs/pull/613 Fixes https://github.com/microsoft/vcpkg/issues/53923 Validation after merging current upstream main: - macOS Debug build; all 534 unit tests passed (8,005 assertions). - Actual PowerShell execution of the binary-cache-compression and ci suites passed, using the repository prelude and a local runner with `/opt/vcpkg`. - PowerShell message-usage validation passed; regenerated message map matches. - `git diff --check` passed. - Prior macOS integration checks covered archive integrity, restored payloads, and eight invalid CLI/environment values. Windows and Linux execution for the latest revision is left to CI. --------- Co-authored-by: Copilot Autofix powered by AI <175728472+Copilot@users.noreply.github.com> |

Change Run-VcpkgAndCaptureBoth to join the pipes using cmd or sh rather than PowerShell. (#2127)
PowerShell's `&2>1` behavior seems to be totally broken according to https://github.com/PowerShell/PowerShell/issues/5424 -- it does not actually bind both stdout and stderr to the same underlying pipe object, so the output gets scrambled. Change our e2e tests to bind the pipes with a subshell that actually works instead. Alternate resolution of the problem fixed in https://github.com/microsoft/vcpkg-tool/pull/2125/changes#r4076661591 |

Standardize binary cache upload failure diagnostics (#2105)
Fixes microsoft/vcpkg#28927 ## Background Binary cache upload failures currently produce provider-specific diagnostics. For example, HTTP uploads may report: ``` warning: curl failed to PUT file ``` while S3 uploads may report: ``` warning: ... aws s3 cp ... failed with exit code 1 ``` This makes it difficult for CI systems to reliably detect binary cache upload failures by parsing the log. ## Changes Prepend a standardized message to existing binary cache upload failure diagnostics: ``` Binary cache upload failed: ``` For example: ``` warning: Binary cache submission failed: curl failed to PUT file ... warning: Binary cache submission failed: ... aws s3 cp ... failed with exit code 1 ``` The provider-specific diagnostic details are preserved. ## Example ``` ./vcpkg install stb --binarysource="http,https://not.found.com/{sha},readwrite;files,/invalid/path,readwrite;x-azblob,https://invalid.blob.core.windows.net/invalid_container,sv=2019-12-12&ss=b&srt=o&sp=rcx&se=2020-12-31T06:20:36Z&st=2020-12-30T22:20:36Z&spr=https&sig=abcd,readwrite;x-gcs,gs://invalid_bucket/,readwrite;x-aws,s3://invalid/,readwrite" ``` ``` warning: Binary cache submission failed: Failed to store binary cache /invalid/path/95/95584acc45b1951d64da3c3ff9e1e3ae5cecc0ef0de37673e12bdc1ad5feb508.zip No such file or directory warning: Binary cache submission failed: curl operation failed with error code 6 (Couldn't resolve host name). warning: Binary cache submission failed: curl operation failed with error code 6 (Couldn't resolve host name). warning: Binary cache submission failed: /Users/xiaozhuai/.openclaw/workspace/vcpkg/downloads/tools/gsutil-5.37-osx/gsutil/gsutil -q cp /Users/xiaozhuai/.openclaw/workspace/vcpkg/packages/stb_arm64-osx.zip gs://invalid_bucket/95584acc45b1951d64da3c3ff9e1e3ae5cecc0ef0de37673e12bdc1ad5feb508.zip failed with exit code 1 BucketNotFoundException: 404 gs://invalid_bucket bucket does not exist. warning: Binary cache submission failed: /opt/homebrew/bin/aws s3 cp /Users/xiaozhuai/.openclaw/workspace/vcpkg/packages/stb_arm64-osx.zip s3://invalid/95584acc45b1951d64da3c3ff9e1e3ae5cecc0ef0de37673e12bdc1ad5feb508.zip failed with exit code 1 upload failed: packages/stb_arm64-osx.zip to s3://invalid/95584acc45b1951d64da3c3ff9e1e3ae5cecc0ef0de37673e12bdc1ad5feb508.zip Unable to locate credentials ``` --------- Co-authored-by: Billy Robert O'Neal III <bion@microsoft.com> |

Match xbox expressions to CMake definitions (#2124)
While documenting the Apple platform expression added for #2121 in MicrosoftDocs/vcpkg-docs#612, the platform-expression reference exposed that the existing xbox identifier did not match `VCPKG_TARGET_IS_XBOX`. The CMake definition recognizes Xbox only for the desktop Windows system name (empty or undefined) with a non-empty `VCPKG_XBOX_CONSOLE_TARGET`. Platform expressions previously checked only the console target, so UWP and unrelated target systems could incorrectly satisfy xbox. Apply both conditions and cover missing, empty, desktop Windows, UWP, and non-Windows system-name cases. Audit for git commands that can accept more --. (#2118)
We got a report complaining that vcpkg-artifacts can misbehave if you ask for a branch name with funny command line implications. vcpkg-artifacts is slated for removal (see https://github.com/microsoft/vcpkg-tool/pull/2032 ) but is still around due to one important customer still using it for now. If this only affected vcpkg-artifacts I would have made no changes, but I also asked GPT 5.6 Sol to audit for other examples because we invoke git all over the place and it found some places that could be better. --------- Co-authored-by: Copilot <223556219+Copilot@users.noreply.github.com> Copilot-Session: 9880d476-bed1-4a5c-b356-b02bbd419d90 |

Use rename_or_delete when finalizing a downloaded .part file (#2097)
Fixes #2096. Concurrent vcpkg processes download an asset to `<dest>.<pid>.part` and then rename it onto the shared `<dest>`. The part files are distinct, but the rename is unserialized, and on Windows it fails with `ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED` while another process holds the freshly-renamed destination open — which is exactly what that process does next, hashing it or extracting it as a tool. `rename_or_delete` is the compare-and-swap that already handles this pattern for the extracted tool directory, a few frames up in `download_tool`: ```cpp auto maybe_partial_path = extract_archive_to_temp_subdirectory(context, fs, *this, download_path, tool_dir_path); if (auto partial_path = maybe_partial_path.get()) { if (!fs.rename_or_delete(context, *partial_path, tool_dir_path)) ``` It is the right primitive for the download too, and in fact more obviously so: the destination is content-addressed and `check_downloaded_file_hash` runs on the line immediately before, so a destination that already exists is bit-identical and discarding the loser's copy is a no-op. It also retries transient failures with backoff, which the bare `rename` did not. The `DiagnosticContext` overload returns `Optional<bool>`, whose `operator bool` is `has_value`, so `!result` distinguishes a genuine failure from "lost the CAS, which is fine" — the same discrimination `download_tool` relies on. Three call sites finalize a part file and all three are changed: the direct download, and the two asset-cache-script paths (with and without an expected hash). The third has no hash to verify, so which copy survives is arbitrary either way — it was `MOVEFILE_REPLACE_EXISTING` (last writer wins) and is now first writer wins. Happy to drop that one if you would rather keep the change to the hash-verified paths. Verified against the reproducer in the issue: six concurrent `vcpkg install` invocations for different triplets against a cold `VCPKG_DOWNLOADS` go from 15/18 failures to passing, once the destination is no longer contended. |

Add apple as a valid platform expression (#2121)
On the `vcpkg` side we already have `VCPKG_TARGET_IS_APPLE`, add a respective platform expression identifier. The main reason I want that is I found at least some packages with a very wide `supports` clause which instead of listing the supported platforms lists the unsupported platforms like `!a & !b & ...`. There are a bunch of cases that support Windows, Linux (and often by extension Android) and macOS (which in a lot of cases by extension means all Apple platforms) so instead of listing `windows & linux & android & osx & ios & tvos & watchos & visionos` being able to write `windows & linux & android & apple` looks much nicer. |

Do not replace registry errors with "<port> does not exist" (#2095)
Fixes #2094. `VersionedPortfileProviderImpl::entry()` threw away the error returned by `get_port_entry` and substituted `{package_name} does not exist`, so any registry-level failure was reported as the port not existing. `get_port_entry` returns `ExpectedL<std::unique_ptr<RegistryEntry>>` with three outcomes: 1. **error** — something went wrong talking to the registry 2. **value, null pointer** — the registry genuinely has no such port 3. **value, non-null** — found Case 2 is already handled downstream in `load_control_file`: ```cpp if (!ent->get()) { return msg::format_error(msgPortDoesNotExist, msg::package_name = version_spec.port_name); } ``` so the `else` branch touched here is reached **only** for case 1. It also used `msg::format` rather than `msg::format_error`, so the line wasn't even prefixed with `error:`. ## Before / after This hid #2066 from us entirely. A concurrent `git init` race in the registries cache made `get_port_entry` fail, and the entire user-visible output was: ``` Fetching registry information from https://github.com/microsoft/vcpkg (HEAD)... apr does not exist apr-util does not exist capstone does not exist crc32c does not exist expat does not exist ... ``` No `error:` prefix, no git output — just every port from the default registry declared non-existent, which points suspicion at the manifest or the baseline instead of at the registry fetch that actually failed. Finding the real message required a `GIT_TRACE2_EVENT` capture of a live failure: ``` could not lock config file .../registries/git/.git/config: File exists could not set 'core.repositoryformatversion' to '0' ``` With this change that message reaches the user directly. Worth noting: #2066 hit the same underlying failure but reached it through `get_baseline_version`, which propagates errors correctly — so that reporter saw the actual git error. The difference was entirely this one `else` branch. ## The change ```cpp entry_it = m_entry_cache.emplace(name.to_string(), std::move(entry).error()).first; ``` `ExpectedT::error() &&` already exists and the cache value type is constructible from `LocalizedString`, so this is a drop-in replacement for the discarded `msg::format(...)`. `msgPortDoesNotExist` remains in use for the genuine cases at both other call sites in this file. |

Fix binary cache precheck result mapping (#2112)
Fixes `ReadOnlyBinaryCache::precheck()` assigning provider results to the wrong `CacheStatus` after the action list has been filtered. `action_ptrs` and `cache_result` use indices local to the filtered list, while `statuses` uses indices from the original action list. The existing code wrote results to `statuses[i]`, ignoring the original indices stored in `indexes`. |

Parallelize ObjectStorageProvider downloads (#2088)
This is https://github.com/microsoft/vcpkg-tool/pull/1485 / https://github.com/microsoft/vcpkg-tool/pull/1392 now that we have the DiagnosticContext infrastructure to make it not painful. Run up to eight external object-storage downloads concurrently while respecting lower VCPKG_MAX_CONCURRENCY values. Each worker writes to its own result slot and FullyBufferedDiagnosticContext; after all workers finish, diagnostics are replayed on the calling thread in action order, avoiding concurrent console I/O. Add a bounded execute_in_parallel overload without changing existing callers, plus regression coverage for its concurrency ceiling. --------- Co-authored-by: Copilot <223556219+Copilot@users.noreply.github.com> |
