Max LvandClaude 50f1ae54f7 Fix findings from the security audit (#3083)
* Fix findings from the security audit

Remote:
- TCP: handshake/connect deadlines follow --timeout instead of a 24h
minimum, so idle sockets can no longer fill the connection pool.
- ACL: IPv4-mapped IPv6 addresses are matched against the IPv4 lists.
- UDP server now enforces the peer ACL and the outbound block list.
- ACL loading fails closed on bad files or invalid entries.
- TCP half-close is relayed instead of tearing the connection down.
- AEAD-2022 UDP sessions are created only after timestamp/replay checks.

ss-manager:
- Owner-only conf files (deleted on remove), 0600 control socket,
umask 022, safe working directory, loopback-only IP addresses,
per-user sender check on Linux, plugins only over the UNIX socket.
- Port canonicalisation, list() overflow, add/remove waits for the
server, stale pid files can't signal unrelated processes.

Also: plugins drop to --user, daemonize readiness/pid file handling,
resolver cancellation, replay-filter fail-closed, key wiping, spec
strictness in AEAD/2022 parsing, JSON surrogate validation, ss:// plugin
name checks, embedding API state reset, Android protect_socket replies.

Adds tests/test_server_acl.py and tests/test_half_close.py and extends
the manager, ACL, AEAD-2022 and ssurl tests.

* Fix CI on Ubuntu 26.04 runners; use string_view over raw string pointers

- Define _GLIBCXX_NO_ASSERTIONS: libstdc++ 15 enables assertions at -O0,
which pulls __glibcxx_assert_fail (C++ runtime) into the programs.
- test_redir_qemu: boot the guest with -cpu max so the runner's glibc
  loader runs under TCG.
- find_program: std::string_view PATH splitting into a fixed buffer, no
heap and no null snprintf destination (GCC -Wformat-truncation).
- manager: parse /proc/net/udp numbers with strtoul (cert-err34-c);
  walk /proc/<pid>/cmdline with std::string_view.
- ssurl: sanitise the tag through std::span.

* coverage: tolerate gcov 15 lambda inconsistencies in lcov 2

Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>

* resolver: replace init's cleanup lambda with a member; lcov --list ignores inconsistent

gcov 15 marks the lambda as not hit while its lines are, which lcov 2
rejects.

Max Lv db861130d7 Lease relay buffers from a shared pool (#3081)
A connection's two 16 KiB relay buffers lived inline in its slot, so every
connection that had moved a byte kept those pages resident even while idle.
They now come from one ObjectPool with two buffers per connection slot: a
connection leases a buffer while bytes wait in it and returns it when it
drains, and the LIFO free list hands the same warm pages to the next busy
connection. The pool covers every direction of every slot, so a lease never
fails and reads never wait on it.

With 1,000 idle connections, ss-server drops from 35.4 to 27.2 KiB per
connection on Linux (C: 26.2) and from 73.9 to 42.2 KiB on macOS. The slot
shrinks from 104 to 68 KiB.

FixedBuffer gains a user-provided constructor so that value-initialising one
(a pool lease, a variant alternative) no longer zero-fills its storage.

Max Lv ee7539155d C++20 port 16/16: config parsing on arenas, unit tests in C++ (#3080)
* Rename test_jconf.c to test_jconf_cpp.cpp

* Parse the config file on arenas

read_jconf now reads the file and builds the JSON tree in a scratch arena
that is released before it returns, and copies the parsed strings into one
process-lifetime arena instead of a malloc per string. parse_addr and the
config parser share one address splitter.

Port test_jconf to C++ and cover every field copied out of the parse tree,
a re-read, and the densest file the size limit accepts.

* tests: rename remaining C unit tests to .cpp (no content changes)

* tests: port remaining C unit tests to the C++ test harness

Convert acl, acl_literal, aead2022, base64, buffer, cache (legacy
reference), crypto, ipset, ipset_reference, json, netutils, ppbloom,
process, ref, ssurl and utils tests to test_helpers.hpp. ctest names are
unchanged; every assertion is kept. Build the ported sources with the
strict C++ warning set.

* Run clang-tidy on every ported test

The test regex skipped file names with digits (test_aead2022_cpp.cpp,
test_base64_cpp.cpp); include them, fix the two optional accesses it then
reports, and build test_jconf with the strict warning set.

* docs: per-connection RSS on Linux against the C relay

* test_jconf: check read_jconf results before using them

Max Lv f1f31c3c05 C++20 port 15/15: remove the stream ciphers (#3079)
* Remove the stream ciphers

The unauthenticated stream ciphers (aes-*-cfb, aes-*-ctr, camellia-*-cfb,
chacha20, chacha20-ietf, salsa20) are gone from every build, together
with the SS_ENABLE_LEGACY option, the C++ stream codecs, their C test
oracle and the stream-only tests and configurations. A configuration
naming one of them, or RC4/table, now fails at startup with a message
pointing to an AEAD method, and test_cli checks that.

Shell completions list only the supported methods (and now include the
2022 ones), and the docs and the compatibility contract say the stream
ciphers were removed.

* Drop the Mbed TLS CFB requirement and stale stream-cipher examples

CFB was only needed by the removed stream ciphers, so a system Mbed TLS
built without it no longer fails to configure. The public header example
now uses aes-256-gcm.

Max Lv 002b4093fd C++20 port 14/14: remove the C shims, report, fixes (#3077)
* Remove ss_event and the C resolver shim

Each program's loop, signals, plugin watcher and stats timer now go
through ss::event::Program (src/event/program.hpp), held on main()'s
stack; ss-manager uses it too. ss-server resolves the manager address
with the relay resolver. With no C caller left, ss_event.cpp/.h,
resolv.cpp/.h and their C tests go; test_resolver_cpp.cpp replaces the
resolver tests against the same delayed local DNS server, and ss_ev is
now an interface target over libuv.

* Reinitialize the event loop after daemonize()

The loop is created before the programs fork into the background, and
kqueue/epoll descriptors do not survive fork(), so ss-server -f (which
ss-manager always uses) died as soon as it ran. Call uv_loop_fork() in
the child.

* Move the C codecs to tests/reference and drop uthash from ss-manager

The programs now use only the C++ codecs. The C stream/AEAD/AEAD-2022
implementations stay as the reference the differential tests and the C
unit tests compare against. Key derivation and the cipher tables used by
the doc snippets move to src/crypto/keys.{hpp,cpp}.

ss-manager keeps its servers in an ss_list (at most MAX_PORT_NUM,
looked up only on control messages) instead of a uthash table, and
tests/test_manager.py covers add/ping/list/remove end to end.

* Replace uthash and ss_list with the C++ containers

The C cache (now used only by the reference codecs) moves to
tests/reference and src/uthash.h is deleted. ACL rules and ss-manager's
servers are ListNodes on IntrusiveLists; destroying an element unlinks
it, so the free paths no longer have to remember to. core.h keeps only
ss_ip. test_rule is ported to C++ and also covers literal rules.

* Describe the C++20/libuv build in the Debian and snap metadata

* Keep clang-tidy clean in the new C++ tests

* Add --max-dns-queries / max_dns_queries

Sizes the resolver's query pool, the last of the capacity settings the
no-heap-after-startup design calls for. Defaults are unchanged: the
connection limit (plus 64 on ss-server, which also resolves for its
statistics).

* Report the C++20 rewrite: allocation, size, throughput and memory

docs/performance.md compares master (C) with the C++ engine on macOS
arm64: zero heap allocations per connection or datagram (from 27-89),
TCP throughput within noise, and about 20 MiB more RSS at 1,000 open
connections from the inline per-connection buffers. docs/cpp-core.md
and CLAUDE.md now describe the finished layout.

* Fix the MinGW build of ss-server: stat_resolver is POSIX-only

* Fix the fully static image and the build image for the C++ sources

docker/static: the C++ unit tests link the static libstdc++, whose error
paths need an unwinder that --rtlib=compiler-rt does not provide; link
llvm-libunwind. The programs themselves still need no C++ runtime.

docker/build: build in the default bundled mode with CMake instead of
against libev/udns (Alpine's Mbed TLS 4 is not supported by system
mode).

* Fall back to the system heap when a library realloc cannot be served

heap_realloc returned NULL when a block outgrew the largest size class or
the budget, and libuv aborts when growing its watcher array fails: a poll
on fd 8190 or above (about 4,000 connections) killed the process.
Move the block to the system heap instead, as malloc and calloc already
do. test_heap_guard_cpp polls fd 16380 with the heaps installed.

* Leave pool room for UDP sessions that are still closing

An evicted session keeps its pool slot until its socket's close callback
runs, so with pool capacity equal to the table's the acquire after an
eviction failed: a full table dropped new-session packets after evicting
a live session for nothing. The AEAD-2022 shared-session pool had the
same problem with entries still referenced by relay sessions.

* Time client-side TCP connections when idle, not only while connecting

ss-local, ss-tunnel and ss-redir only timed the upstream connect (as the
C relays did), so a client that never finished its SOCKS handshake, or a
stream whose peer vanished without a FIN, held a pool slot forever. With
the pool now a hard cap that pauses accepting when full, enough of them
stopped the listener for good. Every connection now starts with the idle
deadline, connected() re-arms it, and traffic refreshes it for all kinds
(the idle timeout keeps its 24 h floor, MIN_TCP_IDLE_TIMEOUT).

* Include <algorithm> for std::min in crypto/keys.cpp (CLANG64)

* test.py: accept host:port for --dns

The tunnel test hard-coded port 53, so it could only use a public
resolver or root. With a port it runs against a local DNS stand-in.

* Use the Mbed TLS compat wrappers for MD5 key derivation

* Fix the documentation build after moving the codecs

utils.cpp's \snippet aead.cpp and stream.cpp now live in src/crypto/,
which was not on Doxygen's EXAMPLE_PATH, so the man1 and HTML builds
failed. List the documentation sources explicitly instead of guessing
their extension.

Max Lv 1b4c00f28d Add an embedding API: ss_local_start/stop/wait and a C++ wrapper (#3076)
<shadowsocks/control.h> starts ss-local on a library-owned thread,
stops it from any thread through a libuv async handle and waits for it;
<shadowsocks/shadowsocks.hpp> wraps that in a move-only, header-only
shadowsocks::LocalServer whose destructor stops and waits. The library
exports only C symbols, shadowsocks.h is unchanged, and the shared
library version becomes 2.1.0 (SOVERSION 2). test_local_api_cpp covers
the lifecycle; the installed-package consumer gains a C++ program.

Max Lv a22281b1ac C++20 port 12/14: seal the heap, capacity limits (#3078)
* Seal the heap: bounded library heaps and zero-allocation program tests

The programs point libuv, c-ares and Mbed TLS (MBEDTLS_PLATFORM_MEMORY in
the bundled build) at their own FixedHeap before anything runs, mark the
end of startup with heap_seal(), and in verbose mode report heap use and
any allocation after it at exit. The library build keeps the host's
allocator.

measure_alloc.py gains --udp, and the alloc_steady_programs_* tests now
fail on any malloc per relayed TCP connection (by name and by address)
or UDP association, for every cipher family.

* Fix GCC -Wsign-compare errors in the converted C modules

GCC enables -Wsign-compare with -Wall for C++ (clang does not), which
turned a few signed/unsigned comparisons in base64, netutils, server and
manager into errors; udp.cpp needed <ctime>.

* Add --max-connections and --max-udp-sessions

The TCP connection pool and the UDP session table are sized from these
options (or max_connections / max_udp_sessions in the configuration
file) at startup instead of fixed constants; the DNS query pool follows
the connection limit. test_limits.py checks that a connection beyond
the limit is refused and that accepting resumes once one closes.

Max Lv 5c62b2544e C++20 port 11/14: one TCP and UDP relay engine for all programs (#3075)
* Rewrite the resolver in C++ on a fixed query pool

Queries live in pool slots with their first A and AAAA answer inline,
c-ares sockets are watched from a fixed table, and answers reach the
waiter through a callback plus opaque words instead of a back-pointer.
resolv.cpp keeps the C API as a shim. The event Loop can now adopt the
ss_event loop, and a Poll can stop watching a socket it does not own.

* Add the C++ TCP relay engine and run ss-tunnel on it

One engine (src/relay/tcp) for the four TCP relays: connections live in a
fixed pool owned through PoolPtr, handshake, cipher state and buffers are
inline, timeouts are intrusive deadline lists on one timer and DNS answers
come back through generation-checked handles. A full pool refuses new
connections and pauses accepting until a slot frees.

ss-tunnel is the first user; its hand-written relay callbacks are gone.
tests/tunnel_interop.py covers every method against ss-server and
shadowsocks-rust.

* Run ss-local and libshadowsocks-c on the C++ TCP relay engine

The SOCKS5 handshake, the ACL bypass decision (with its own resolver for
host-name rules) and the short wait for a first payload are now engine
code; local.cpp keeps only option parsing and startup. The library entry
points start the same engine.

* Run ss-server on the C++ TCP relay engine

The request header, outbound ACL, target resolution through the relay's
resolver, the anti-probing stop stage and the manager traffic counters
are engine code now; the connmark-to-TOS tracker becomes a pair of relay
hooks. server.cpp keeps option parsing, nftables and the stats timer.

* Fix the build with GCC and libstdc++

crypto.h's min/max macros broke <algorithm> in C++ sources that include
it first, netutils.h's linux/tcp.h clashed with the netinet/tcp.h libuv
includes, and GCC rejects memcpy into crypto_t. Apple clang accepted all
three.

* Run ss-redir and every UDP relay on the C++ engines

ss-redir's TCP side moves onto the relay engine (per-listener TOS for the
DSCP ports). src/relay/udp replaces udprelay.cpp: sessions keyed by
client address own their upstream socket and live in a fixed LRU,
AEAD-2022 server sessions are shared through RefPtr between the
session-ID table and the relays using them, and datagrams waiting for
DNS sit in pool slots. Packets are received into and built in
relay-owned buffers instead of a 64 KiB allocation per datagram. The
programs no longer call crypto_init(); Method sets up libsodium and the
replay filter.

* Let the allocation audit target an IP so DNS costs show separately

* Copy the literal ACL address without strncpy

GCC 13 at -O3 rejects the strncpy from the 256-byte host into the
INET6_ADDRSTRLEN buffer (-Wstringop-truncation) on glibc and UCRT64.

* Include <ctime> for std::time in the UDP relay (libstdc++)

* Build the UDP relay with Clang on musl

musl's CMSG_NXTHDR compares a size_t with a ptrdiff_t, which Clang's
-Wsign-compare rejects in C++. Call it from one helper that suppresses
the warning there.

* Keep clang-tidy clean in the relay engine

Max Lv 5dbcbcbb89 C++20 port 10/14: allocation-free SIP022 codecs (#3074)
* Add allocation-free C++ SIP022 codecs

TCP request/response streams with the salt echo between the two
directions, an exact-match salt pool on FixedLru, and UDP packets sealed
and opened in place with caller-owned session state. Differentially
tested against aead2022.cpp in both roles; the steady phase allocates
nothing.

* Include <algorithm> for std::min in test_crypto_aead2022_cpp.cpp

* Include C++ headers before crypto.h in test_crypto_aead2022_cpp.cpp

crypto.h defines min/max macros for the C sources; libstdc++ headers
included after it fail to parse.

Max Lv 7041693ee4 C++20 port 9/14: own AEAD-2022 UDP sessions by reference (eviction fix) (#3073)
* Own AEAD-2022 UDP sessions by reference so eviction cannot free a live session

The session table and the relay contexts each hold a reference; evicting a
session from the full table no longer frees memory a relay still uses.
Ported from the parked fix/aead2022-udp-session-eviction work.

* Include <netinet/in.h> in the UDP eviction test client (FreeBSD)

FreeBSD's <arpa/inet.h> does not define struct sockaddr_in.

Max Lv 0fb282245c C++20 port 8/14: allocation-free stream cipher codecs (#3072)
* Add allocation-free C++ stream cipher codecs

src/crypto/stream.hpp implements the legacy stream methods this build
supports (AES CFB/CTR, Camellia CFB, Salsa20, ChaCha20, ChaCha20-IETF)
as value types. The AES and Camellia contexts are held by value through
Mbed TLS's block-cipher APIs instead of an allocated
mbedtls_cipher_context_t, and the libsodium ciphers track their
keystream position, finishing partial 64-byte blocks from a stack block
instead of the padding copies stream.cpp makes.

test_crypto_stream_cpp runs TCP streams (with fragments that split
keystream blocks) and UDP packets between the C and C++
implementations in both directions for all twelve methods and checks
IV replay; alloc_steady_crypto_stream requires zero allocations for new
connections and packets.

* Document the crypto codecs, cache rewrite and allocation progress

* Include <algorithm> for std::min in test_crypto_stream_cpp.cpp

* Do not memcpy from an empty span in the stream decoder

An empty read before the IV arrived passed a null source to memcpy,
which UBSan reports (and the ASan CI job turns into a failure).

* Include C++ headers before crypto.h in test_crypto_stream_cpp.cpp

crypto.h defines min/max macros for the C sources; libstdc++ headers
included after it fail to parse.

Max Lv 10de9aad5d Rewrite the cache on a fixed slab without per-entry allocation (#3071)
cache.cpp keeps its C API but replaces uthash and the two mallocs per
entry with one slab of nodes holding their keys inline, linked in
last-use order, and an open-addressing index of node ids that hashes
through the slab with a per-cache random seed. Both blocks are reserved
by cache_create() and touched only as entries are used, so a large,
mostly empty cache costs no resident memory.

Semantics are unchanged: an insert evicts the least recently used entry
once the cache holds capacity entries (the AEAD-2022 session table's
4095/4096 boundary), lookups refresh recency and age, cache_clear()
drops stale entries, and free_cb may re-enter the cache. Re-inserting a
key now replaces its data instead of shadowing it. cache_create_keyed()
sizes keys per cache; the AEAD-2022 salt pool and session table use it.

test_cache_cpp covers the boundary, ordering, replacement, ageing,
re-entrant callbacks and limits; alloc_steady_cache requires zero
allocations across 100,000 inserts on a full cache. AEAD-2022 ss-server
drops from 84 to 80 allocations per relayed connection.

Max Lv 8d39cd7569 C++20 port 6/14: allocation-free AEAD codecs (#3070)
* Add allocation-free C++ AEAD codecs

src/crypto/aead.hpp implements the SIP004/SIP007 AEAD ciphers as value
types: AeadEngine holds the libsodium or Mbed TLS GCM state by value,
AeadTcpEncryptor/AeadTcpDecryptor frame the chunk stream with a fixed
reassembly buffer, and aead_udp_seal/open handle packets. HKDF-SHA1 runs
on stack SHA-1 state instead of Mbed TLS's allocating HMAC API.

The bundled Mbed TLS config now enables MBEDTLS_BLOCK_CIPHER_C, which
keeps the AES context inside mbedtls_gcm_context, so GCM key setup no
longer allocates. That alone saves the C programs two allocations per
connection.

test_crypto_aead_cpp checks HKDF against RFC 5869 and crypto_hkdf, runs
TCP streams and UDP packets between the C and C++ implementations in
both directions for all five AEAD methods, and covers tampering,
framing and salt replay. alloc_steady_crypto_aead runs it under the
malloc counter and requires zero allocations across 600 new
connections and 600 packets (tests/alloc_audit/check_steady.py).

ss_strict_warnings() now applies -Wextra per source file so targets
mixing new C++ with converted C modules keep the latter at -Wall, and
Result gains move assignment.

* Include <algorithm> for std::min in test_crypto_aead_cpp.cpp

* Build the C++ AEAD codecs against Mbed TLS 2.x

Mbed TLS 2 returns void from mbedtls_sha1_starts/update/finish (the int
versions are the _ret variants), which the system-library build on
Ubuntu (2.28) rejects. crypto/mbedtls_compat.hpp gives one int-returning
spelling for both.

* Include C++ headers before crypto.h in test_crypto_aead_cpp.cpp

crypto.h defines min/max macros for the C sources; libstdc++ headers
included after it fail to parse.

* Disable the zero-allocation checks with a system Mbed TLS

They hold for the bundled Mbed TLS (MBEDTLS_BLOCK_CIPHER_C); a system
one may allocate in GCM key setup, as the Debian package build shows.

Max Lv 8c3390887e Add the C++ event layer over libuv (#3069)
src/event/loop.hpp wraps uv_loop/poll/timer/signal/async handles that
live by value inside their owner and dispatch to an owner member
function chosen at compile time. A Poll owns its socket and carries
read and write interest on one handle, closing the descriptor in
libuv's close callback. CloseGroup collects the asynchronous closes of
an owner's handles and reports completion afterwards, which is how
pooled owners implement AsyncClosable. DeadlineList drives the idle
timeouts of many owners from one timer.

test_event_cpp covers readiness, closing a peer from inside a
callback, recycling a pooled owner only after its handles closed,
repeating timers, deadline ordering and cross-thread wakeups.

Max Lv d6691b9e33 C++20 port 4/14: compile the event loop, UDP relay and programs as C++ (#3068)
* Make the event loop, UDP relay and programs compile as C++

Cast allocator results and void* callback data explicitly, cast string
literals stored in char * variables, replace compound literals in
ss_event.c with zeroing plus member assignment, and give ss-server's
listener array its MAX_REMOTE_NUM bound instead of a VLA.

Where a goto CLEAN_UP jumps over an initialised declaration (C++
rejects that), split the declaration from its initialisation in place.
The variables were already indeterminate at the label in C, and the
cleanup code does not read them. Checked for every MODULE_* variant of
udprelay.c, plus LIB_ONLY for local.c. Still valid C.

* Compile the event loop, UDP relay and programs as C++

Rename utils, ss_event, udprelay, winsock, local, server, tunnel, redir
and manager from .c to .cpp. Inside the moved files only the
\snippet{doc} file references and header comments change; snippet
references in doc/*.md, tests/test_cli_docs.py, the build files and
CONTRIBUTION.md follow the new names.

Also cast the Windows-only string literal returned by
get_default_conf(), found by the zig x86_64-windows-gnu build.

Every module of src/ except the unbuilt android.c and the vendored
blake3 is now compiled as C++20. The new .cpp files join the no-heap
ratchet baseline.

* Add the two casts ss-redir needs as C++

ss-redir only builds on Linux, so the macOS conversion checks never
compiled it: getsockname() wants a struct sockaddr *, and memcpy's
void * result needs a cast.
2026-10-15 09:53:31 +08:00
Max Lv a577ae0927 C++20 port 3/14: compile crypto, config, DNS, ACL and plugin modules as C++ (#3067)
* Make the crypto, config, DNS and plugin modules compile as C++

Cast allocator and memchr results explicitly, pass mbedtls_operation_t
to mbedtls_cipher_setkey, and declare the two locals in
ss2022_encrypt_first() before the gotos that jump past them. Drop the
unused RESOLV_MODE global that resolv.c defined by accident through an
anonymous enum declaration. Still valid C.

* Raise the test origin's listen backlog

socketserver listens with a backlog of 5. With concurrent connections
through the proxy on a loaded machine (parallel ctest), the backlog
overflows, the kernel resets the origin connection, and the proxy
correctly drops the client, which surfaced as intermittent
alloc_audit_report failures ("getpeername: Invalid argument" in
ss-local, "Connection reset by peer" in ss-server). Reproduced
reliably at 64 concurrent connections; gone with a backlog of 256.

* Compile the crypto, config, DNS, ACL and plugin modules as C++

Rename netutils, jconf, stream, aead, aead2022, aead2022_udp, crypto,
acl, plugin, plugin_disabled and resolv from .c to .cpp without changing
their contents, and update source lists, snippet references, test
comments and debian/copyright.

The Doxygen source list and scripts/check_cli_docs.py now accept either
extension for each module, so the remaining programs can move one at a
time. The new .cpp files are added to the no-heap ratchet baseline.
2026-10-15 09:52:17 +08:00
Max Lv 384810efce C++20 port 2/14: compile the leaf modules as C++ (#3066)
* Make headers and leaf modules compile as C++

Wrap the declarations of every project header in extern "C" (after the
system includes, which must keep C++ linkage), so converted modules and
the remaining C files agree on linkage.

In the leaf modules, cast allocator and memchr results explicitly,
rename identifiers called new, replace the getpwnam_r VLA with the
fixed 16 KiB buffer the loop already capped itself at, and make the
rlimit initialiser conversion explicit. All of this is still valid C.

* Compile the leaf modules as C++

Rename base64, json, ipset, process, ppbloom, rule, ssurl and cache from
.c to .cpp without touching their contents, and update the CMake source
lists, debian/copyright and the docs.

Ported code keeps -Wall; -Wextra is now opt-in through
ss_strict_warnings() for code written as C++ (the core tests).
check_no_heap.py gains a ratchet baseline for the converted modules,
which still allocate the way the C code did. A new check_cxx_runtime
test verifies with nm that the programs and libshadowsocks-c.a still
need no C++ runtime library, so C consumers are unaffected.

* Fix the Windows branches of process.cpp for C++

Cast allocator results and the thread argument explicitly and
value-initialise JOBOBJECT_EXTENDED_LIMIT_INFORMATION with {}. Found by
the zig x86_64-windows-gnu cross build.

* Keep clang-tidy clean for the converted modules

Once the C headers are included from C++ translation units,
bugprone-dynamic-static-initializers reports each extern variable
declaration in them; none is defined in a header, so disable the check.
Mark the two bounded memchr searches in ssurl.cpp, which
bugprone-not-null-terminated-result misreads as string copies.

* check_cxx_runtime: ignore glibc symbol versions

nm on glibc prints __cxa_atexit@GLIBC_2.2.5, which the allowlist for the
libc-provided __cxa_atexit/__cxa_finalize did not match.

* Keep GCC's C++-only warnings off for modules converted from C

GCC's C++ -Wall includes -Wsign-compare and -Wclass-memaccess, which C's
-Wall does not, so the converted modules failed -Werror on GCC (Linux,
UCRT64) although nothing in them changed. They keep the warning set they
were written against; code under ss_strict_warnings() re-enables both.

Max Lv bcb3731968 C++20 port 1/14: build, ownership core and allocation audit (#3065)
* Enable C++20 alongside C11 in the build

Add CXX to the project with C++20 (no extensions) and build C++ sources
with -Wextra -fno-exceptions -fno-rtti -fno-threadsafe-statics on top of
the existing warning flags. Give every toolchain a C++ compiler: the zig
Windows toolchain, the static macOS/Windows CI jobs, the static musl
image (clang++ plus libstdc++ headers) and the RPM spec.

* Add C++20 ownership and allocation core

Header-only primitives for the no-heap-after-startup design:
Result/Status, Region, ObjectPool with PoolPtr (std::unique_ptr with a
pool deleter), generation-checked Handle and asynchronous close support,
intrusive RefPtr, FixedBuffer, MonotonicArena, FixedHashMap and FixedLru,
IntrusiveList, and a bounded FixedHeap for third-party allocator hooks.

Unit tests cover each primitive (test_core_*). scripts/check_no_heap.py
rejects heap allocation in C++ sources under src/ and runs as a ctest.
clang-tidy now also analyses C++ sources and the core headers.

* Add heap allocation audit for relayed connections

alloc_counter is a preloadable malloc counter (glibc, macOS) that writes
a snapshot on SIGUSR2. measure_alloc.py warms ss-local and ss-server up,
snapshots both, relays more connections and reports allocations per
connection. It runs report-only as the alloc_audit_report ctest.
interop.peers() now yields the started processes.

* Document the C++20 port and allocation baseline

docs/cpp-core.md describes the language profile, the core primitives,
the phase plan and the measured C baseline (77-89 allocations per
connection in ss-server, 27-39 in ss-local). The compatibility contract
now keeps the C11 public header instead of a C11 code base. CLAUDE.md
drops stale libev, submodule and gnu99 references.

* Fix CI for the C++ core: libstdc++ headers, static unwinder, newer clang

- docker/static: Alpine's libstdc++ headers come with g++, and the C++
tests' static libstdc++ needs an unwinder that compiler-rt lacks; add
  g++ and llvm-libunwind.
- FixedBuffer: drop the unused kCapacity (clang-tidy 18 reports it as a
  dynamically initialized header static).
- ss-server on Windows: manager_addr was only read in POSIX-only code,
which newer clang rejects (-Wunused-but-set-global); say that the
  option is ignored there.

* CI: allow running the test and build workflows by hand

Stacked PRs target their parent branch, which these workflows do not
trigger on; workflow_dispatch lets each layer run the full matrix.

* CI: let clang-tidy ignore GCC-only warning flags

The compile database comes from a GCC build, whose flags (for example
-Wno-class-memaccess) clang-tidy does not know and reports as errors.

Max LvandClaude 553cdc7945 Add opt-in printable TCP salt experiment for ss-local (#3063)
Add `ss-local --printable-salt` / `"printable_salt": true`, disabled by
default. For each outgoing TCP salt it picks a prefix length uniformly
from 6-12 bytes and samples those bytes as printable ASCII (0x20-0x7e)
immediately before key derivation. The salt stays 32 bytes with no
framing or markers, so the wire format is unchanged and any stock
server interoperates. Only chacha20-ietf-poly1305 and aes-256-gcm are
accepted; other ciphers fail at startup. UDP, server responses, and
AEAD-2022 are untouched.

Crypto unit tests cover length distribution, empty first writes, exact
framing overhead, salt-tail preservation, byte-at-a-time decryption,
tampering and replay rejection. CLI tests check local-only exposure and
cipher rejection via flag, config key and bad config type. interop.py
gains --printable-salt and --server-bin for independent stock servers.

docs/printable-salt.md records the design, entropy bound, fingerprint
caveats and route-experiment procedure; docs/encoding-experiments.md
and tests/experiments/ hold the Base85/lowpop85/TLS outer-transport
prototypes. docs/measurements/printable-salt-2026-09-23/ archives the
sanitized results of the aborted field trials.

Max Lv 8773939dce Raise the file descriptor limit for descriptor-heavy tests
test_event opens 256 UDP receivers plus a sender on top of the loop's own
descriptors. macOS starts processes with a soft RLIMIT_NOFILE of 256, so
socket() eventually returned -1 and the unchecked descriptor tripped the
bind() assertion when running ctest from a stock terminal (#3058).

Wrap every registered unit test in a small sh launcher that raises the soft
limit to 1024 before exec'ing the binary, and have test_event raise its own
limit as well so it also passes when run directly. Assert on socket()
failures so a limit problem is reported as such instead of as a bind error.

Max Lv fdde2c7cee Release the bloom filter in the AEAD-2022 tests
crypto_init() initializes the nonce bloom filter on every call, so a test
that builds a crypto_t per case has to tear it down per case as well.
Freeing only once at the end leaked a pair of filters for every crypto_t
after the first, which the valgrind memcheck job caught.

test_crypto.c already frees it alongside each crypto_t; do the same here
by folding it into the local free_crypto() helper.

Max Lv 8cc58cea95 Accept an ss:// server URL on the ss-local command line
shadowsocks-rust takes a whole server definition as a URL; libev could
only be given the pieces separately, so importing a server meant taking a
URL apart by hand. ss-local now accepts --server-url and reads the
address, port, cipher, password and SIP003 plugin from it.

Both encodings are handled: the SIP002 form with the userinfo in
base64url, and the older form where the whole body is one base64 blob.
The userinfo is also accepted in the clear, because that is what
shadowsocks-rust's `ssurl` emits for the 2022 ciphers, whose base64
pre-shared keys it percent-encodes instead. IPv6 literals, a trailing
slash, the plugin query and the '#' tag are all covered.

Options given later on the command line still win, since they are applied
as getopt reaches them.

ssurl.c sits with the ss-local sources rather than the shared ones: it
depends on base64.c, which ss-manager does not link.

The tests include URLs copied verbatim from `ssurl --encode` output, so
the parser is pinned against what another implementation really produces
rather than only against my reading of the spec. Verified end to end by
pointing ss-local at a rust-generated URL and proxying through their
ssserver.

Max Lv 3728a993a7 Add an interoperability test against shadowsocks-rust
A cipher can round-trip perfectly against our own implementation and
still be wrong: header layout, padding rules, and nonce ordering are only
pinned down by talking to another implementation. This drives ss-local
against rust's ssserver and rust's sslocal against ss-server, over a
local origin server so it needs no network access.

Covers the three SIP022 methods plus aes-256-gcm, so a regression in the
legacy path shows up here too. Skips itself when shadowsocks-rust or the
built binaries are absent, so it is safe to run anywhere.

Max Lv 06bbf3d86c Use snprintf for port formatting
The buffers were all large enough for a uint16, so none of these could
actually overflow, but sprintf gives the compiler and the linters nothing
to check. Passing the destination size makes that guarantee explicit and
survives any later change to the buffers.

parse_udprelay_header writes through a caller-supplied pointer, so it
uses the MAX_PORT_STR_LEN contract its callers already allocate to.
2026-08-19 18:27:19 +08:00
Max Lv 98915c7828 Build as C11 and remove input-sized VLAs from key parsing
crypto_parse_key sized a stack array from strlen() of the key given on
the command line or in the config file, so a long enough key string
overflowed the stack before any validation ran. Only the first key_len
bytes were ever used, and base64_decode already stops at the size it is
given, so a fixed MAX_KEY_LENGTH buffer is enough. crypto_parse_psk
needs one byte of slack to tell an over-long key from an exact-size one.

The two "here is a valid key instead" error paths were identical; they
are now one helper, which also drops the last input-sized VLA.

Switch the standard from gnu99 to C11 via CMAKE_C_STANDARD rather than a
hand-written -std flag, so CMake picks the right spelling per compiler.
2026-08-19 18:24:33 +08:00
Max Lv 46791234c0 Add Shadowsocks 2022 (SIP022) ciphers
shadowsocks-rust has supported the 2022 edition for years while libev was
stuck on the 2017 AEAD construction, the largest functional gap between
the two implementations. This adds the three SIP022 methods:

  2022-blake3-aes-128-gcm
  2022-blake3-aes-256-gcm
  2022-blake3-chacha20-poly1305

TCP uses BLAKE3 derive_key for session subkeys, standalone header chunks
carrying a type byte and timestamp, request padding, and a response header
echoing the request salt. Replay protection uses an exact-match salt pool
with 60s retention rather than the bloom filter, which SIP022 forbids
because false positives are unacceptable there.

UDP is session-based: an AES-ECB separate header for the AES methods and a
merged XChaCha20-Poly1305 construction for ChaCha, with a per-session
sliding window replay filter. Servers must route by client session ID,
which is only known after decryption, so the crypto layer owns the
server-side session table and hands the session back to udprelay for the
reply path.

The 2022 code lives in aead2022.c and aead2022_udp.c so aead.c keeps its
current size, with aead_internal.h carrying what they share. BLAKE3 is
vendored (portable backend only) as its own build target.

Keys are base64 pre-shared keys of exactly the cipher's key size; per
SIP022 a password is never stretched into a key.

Verified interoperable in both directions against shadowsocks-rust 1.24.0
for all three ciphers over TCP and UDP, including an 8MB transfer checked
by digest, plus unit tests for header framing, partial delivery, tamper
detection, and UDP replay rejection.

Max Lv ab6e49381f Accept the standard base64 alphabet when decoding keys
The decode table only mapped the URL-safe alphabet, so '+' and '/' were
rejected as invalid characters. Keys are commonly generated with
`openssl rand -base64`, which emits standard base64, and shadowsocks-rust
accepts either form; a key containing '+' or '/' was refused outright
while the same key worked elsewhere.

Map both alphabets. The affected table entries previously decoded as
"invalid", so no input that used to decode changes meaning.

Max Lv 93b12ec7af Fix mbedTLS headers and libraries being drawn from different installs
find_library's search order puts CMAKE_PREFIX_PATH ahead of HINTS, so on
a Homebrew machine with both mbedtls (4.x) and the keg-only mbedtls@3,
the headers resolved to mbedtls@3 while the libraries resolved to 4.x.

That is not a link error but memory corruption at runtime:
mbedtls_cipher_context_t grew between the two versions, so every context
allocated with ss_malloc(sizeof(cipher_evp_t)) from the 3.x headers was
overrun by 4.x's mbedtls_cipher_init. It corrupted the heap in every
binary that sets up a cipher, and made the unit tests segfault inside an
unrelated malloc.

Pick a prefix that provides both the headers and libmbedcrypto and pin
every component to it, then verify at configure time that the header
version string matches what the linked library reports, so a mismatch
fails the build instead of corrupting memory.

Max LvandClaude Fable 5 dd2704c857 Fix bugs found by clang-tidy triage; ratchet warning budget to zero (#3047)
Real bugs fixed:
- manager.c: kill_server/stop_server checked fscanf() != EOF, so malformed
pid file content left pid uninitialized and passed it to kill(). Parse
  with fgets + ss_parse_int and require pid > 0.
- utils.c: get_default_conf() crashed on strlen(NULL) when HOME is unset
(e.g. daemons started by init) and left a dangling static pointer after
free(), a latent use-after-free on repeated calls. Use a static buffer
and fall back to the system config when HOME is missing.
- local.c: in UDP_ONLY mode, start_ss_local_server() passed uninitialized
listen_ctx.fd to the library callback. Initialize it to -1.

Improvements:
- Replace rand()/srand(time(NULL)) upstream-server selection in ss-local,
  ss-redir and ss-tunnel with libsodium randombytes_uniform(): unbiased,
unpredictable, and no seeding required (cert-msc30/msc32).
- Mark FATAL() noreturn so both the compiler and analyzers understand
control flow (removes a family of analyzer false positives).
- Drop two dead stores (manager.c restore_sigchld, udprelay.c src_addr_len).

All remaining findings were verified as false positives and carry NOLINT
comments with rationale (uthash macro internals, symmetric back-pointer
cleanup, analyzer-invisible postconditions). clang-tidy-18 on Linux now
reports zero warnings, so MAX_WARNINGS drops from 29 to 0.

The idx-tracking optimization in aead_decrypt skipped memmove when
partial AEAD chunks spanned multiple calls, but never compacted the
dead space before idx. This caused the chunk buffer to grow
proportionally to total data transferred (~10 MB growth per 10 MB
transferred), tripping the stress test memory leak threshold.

Compact residual data to the front when appending new ciphertext,
keeping the buffer bounded to the size of the residual plus new data.

(validation, JSON generation, URI encoding, config round-trip parsing).
Tests run in CTest and as a dedicated GitHub Actions step.

Max LvandClaude Opus 4.6 7bb250739e Modernize build: switch to CMake, add unit tests, fix man pages
* Modernize build: switch to CMake, add unit tests, fix man pages

Remove autotools (configure.ac, Makefile.am, m4/, autogen.sh) and make
CMake the sole build system. Enhance CMake with proper Find modules for
MbedTLS, libsodium, PCRE, and c-ares with version/feature detection.
Add support for connmarktos, nftables, stack protector, and MinGW.

Add 10 unit test suites (CTest) covering base64, buffer, cache, crypto,
jconf, json, netutils, ppbloom, rule, and utils modules. Add a Python
stress test measuring bandwidth per cipher with memory leak detection.

Fix man page typos ("Resovle" -> "Resolve"), document missing TCP buffer
options, fix ss-manager duplicate --executable entry, add example section
to ss-tunnel, and document --workdir and --nftables-sets options.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* Migrate from PCRE to PCRE2

Replace legacy PCRE (libpcre3) with PCRE2 (libpcre2-8). PCRE1 has been
end-of-life since 2021.

- src/rule.h: use pcre2_code and pcre2_match_data types
- src/rule.c: pcre_compile -> pcre2_compile, pcre_exec -> pcre2_match,
pcre_free -> pcre2_code_free, with proper error message retrieval
- cmake/FindPCRE.cmake -> cmake/FindPCRE2.cmake: find libpcre2-8 via
  pkg-config, pcre2-config, or manual search
- Update all CMakeLists.txt, config.h.cmake, configure.cmake, README.md

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* Update Dockerfiles: use CMake build and pcre2-dev

The alpine Dockerfile still used autotools (autogen.sh/configure) which
were removed. Switch to cmake build and replace pcre-dev with pcre2-dev.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* Fix Docker build: disable tests and remove git dep

The tests/ directory is excluded by .dockerignore, so pass
-DBUILD_TESTING=OFF to cmake. Submodules are already checked out
by actions/checkout, no need for git inside the container.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* Fix Docker build: disable static libs (not available in alpine)

Alpine's mbedtls-dev only provides shared libraries. Disable static
build since Docker only needs shared binaries.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* Rewrite GitHub Actions: build and test directly on runner

Replace Docker-based CI with direct cmake build on ubuntu-latest and
macos-latest. Install dependencies via apt/brew, build with cmake,
run unit tests with ctest.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* Fix CI: use mbedtls@3 on macOS, disable static build

- macOS: brew's mbedtls is now v4 (incompatible), use mbedtls@3
- Disable static build since CI runners lack static lib packages

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* Fix test build on Linux: add stdint.h and link libm

- test_ppbloom.c: add missing #include <stdint.h> for uint8_t
- test_json: link against libm for pow() used in json.c

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* Fix test_ppbloom link: add libm for bloom's log()

On Linux, libbloom uses log() which requires explicit -lm linkage.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* Fix Linux build: link libm for test_buffer and test_crypto, fix warnings

Both test_buffer and test_crypto link libbloom.so which uses log() from
libm. Also fix unused variable warnings in test_json.c that would fail
with -Werror.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* Fix Linux build: link libm for test_jconf (json.c uses pow)

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* CI: add unit test and stress test steps to GitHub Actions

Split the Test step into separate "Unit tests" (ctest) and "Stress test"
(stress_test.py with 10MB transfer across all AEAD ciphers) steps for
better visibility.
