Gem.open_file_with_lock removed its lock file after releasing the lock. Since flock locks the file itself rather than its path, a process that was waiting on the old file could acquire it after it had been removed, while a newly arriving process created a fresh lock file and locked it immediately, so both ran at the same time. Remove the lock file while still holding the lock, and after acquiring it, check that the locked file is still the one at the lock path, retrying otherwise. https://github.com/ruby/rubygems/commit/9a93c235e7
What is Ruby?
Ruby is an interpreted object-oriented programming language often used for web development. It also offers many scripting features to process plain text and serialized files, or manage system tasks. It is simple, straightforward, and extensible.
Features of Ruby
- Simple Syntax
- Normal Object-oriented Features (e.g. class, method calls)
- Advanced Object-oriented Features (e.g. mix-in, singleton-method)
- Operator Overloading
- Exception Handling
- Iterators and Closures
- Garbage Collection
- Dynamic Loading of Object Files (on some architectures)
- Highly Portable (works on many Unix-like/POSIX compatible platforms as well as Windows, macOS, etc.) cf. https://docs.ruby-lang.org/en/master/maintainers_md.html#label-Platform+Maintainers
