* [AMD CI] Move the AMD docker image to ROCm 10 / torch 2.12 / Python 3.14
Base: rocm/vllm:rocm10.0.0_ubuntu24.04_py3.14_pytorch_2.12.0_vllm_0.27.0 (ships flash-attn).
- drop the separate flash-attn wheel and the system python apt packages
- torchcodec 0.17.0 CPU build (the PyPI wheel needs CUDA libnvrtc)
- build kenlm from source with a regenerated Cython file (no py3.14 build on PyPI)
- import check at the end of the build
* Update ROCm (MI300) test expectations for the ROCm 10 image
* Remove Dockerfile comment
* [AMD CI] Move the AMD docker image to ROCm 10.1 / torch 2.13 and pin MIOpen conv selection
* Install on top of the ROCm 10.1 image's Debian Python through a venv
* Update ROCm (MI300) test expectations for the ROCm 10.1 image
* Shorten Dockerfile comments
pyarrow 26.0.0, released on 2026-10-09, is the first pyarrow that requires NumPy
2.0 or newer at import time, so the image now fails with:
ImportError: ... pyarrow requires NumPy 2.0 or newer.
pyarrow declares no numpy dependency, so neither pip nor uv sees a conflict; the
check only fires at runtime. The actual conflict is between pyctcdecode 0.5.0
(last released in 2023, pins numpy<2.0.0) and gptqmodel (numpy==2.2.6), and
resolving it in pyctcdecode's favour also silently downgrades other packages.
uv pip compile on the image's package set, before and after:
package before after
numpy 1.26.4 2.2.6
gptqmodel 4.2.5 7.6.0
librosa 0.11.0 1.0.0
scipy 1.17.1 1.18.1
pyctcdecode itself works with numpy 2 (verified on 2.2.6 and 2.5.4:
build_ctcdecoder, decode and decode_beams all behave identically); only its
metadata is stale. Upstream PR kensho-technologies/pyctcdecode#118 relaxes the
pin to numpy<3.0.0 but has been open since 2025-10.
UV_OVERRIDE is used rather than a plain pin because pyctcdecode is resolved
again later via transformers[dev], and uv hard-errors on the conflict:
No solution found: pyctcdecode depends on numpy<2.0.0 and you require
numpy==2.2.6

* Move the GPU CI images to the Python in `.python-version`
The NVIDIA images (all-latest, quantization, deepspeed-latest) and the
AMD DeepSpeed image used Ubuntu 22.04's system Python 3.10. They now get
Python from uv at `PYTHON_VERSION`, in a venv on PATH (same setup as
transformers-intel-cpu), so `python`, `python3` and `pip` resolve to it.
`python-is-python3` is no longer needed for DeepSpeed's
`#!/usr/bin/env python` scripts.
transformers-pytorch-amd-gpu ships torch in its base image's Python, so
its base tag is picked from `PYTHON_VERSION`
(rocm7.2_ubuntu22.04_py3.11_pytorch_release_2.10.0). AMD only publishes
pre-built flash-attn wheels for Python 3.10, so flash-attn is now built
from source, from the commit AMD's wheel was built from (0e60e39) and for
the same gfx942/gfx950 targets.
The build workflows pass `PYTHON_VERSION` from `.python-version`.
Unused images (pytorch-gpu, transformers-gpu, pytorch-tpu,
deepspeed-nightly) are left as they are.

* Allow building test GPU images with a postfix from workflow_dispatch
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
* Remove the GitHub API cache-bust from the AMD docker images
* Bust the AMD images' clone cache with the commit being built
Replaces the removed GitHub API `ADD`: the build workflow now passes
`REF=${{ github.sha }}` to the AMD images, so the `git checkout $REF`
step (and every layer after it) changes, and is rebuilt, for each new
commit. No network call, and the image is pinned to the commit it was
built from.

* Share the common GPU image steps through a `gpu-common` build context
The GPU dockerfiles start from different CUDA/ROCm base images, so they
can't share a base image, but they repeated the same steps on top of them.
These now live in `docker/gpu-common/`, passed to the builds as the
`gpu-common` named build context:
- `install-python.sh`: Python from `PYTHON_VERSION` with uv, in a venv
(all-latest, quantization, deepspeed-latest, deepspeed-amd)
- `finish-transformers-install.sh`: uninstall `kernels` + `setup.py
develop` (all five images)
- `check-torch.sh`: import torch and check it still matches the `PYTORCH`
pin (all-latest, quantization, and now deepspeed-latest)
The torch installs stay per image, their differences are intended.

* Install a pre-built flash-attention wheel in the AMD image
AMD's mirror has no Python 3.11 flash-attention wheel, and building the CK backend from source on the image builder
takes hours. Use the torch 2.10 / cp311 ROCm wheel from mjun0812/flash-attention-prebuild-wheels instead, pinned by
checksum, and import it at build time to catch an ABI mismatch with the base image's torch.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
* Build flash-attention from source in the AMD image, tuned like the NVIDIA one
Drop the third-party pre-built wheel and build the CK backend from the upstream commit AMD's wheel was built from, with
the same tweaks as the NVIDIA FA2 build: MAX_JOBS derived from the runner's RAM (setup.py's default leaves most of the
runner idle) and a filtered build log, since hipify's output fills BuildKit's per-step log limit before compilation
starts. Give the AMD image job an explicit timeout below GitHub's 6h default.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
* Leave the AMD PyTorch image out of the Python move
#49460 moves `transformers-pytorch-amd-gpu` to a ROCm 10 / Python 3.14 base image that ships flash-attention, while
AMD only publishes Python 3.10 flash-attention wheels for the current base and building them from source takes hours.
Keep that image (Dockerfile and build job) as on main.

* [Docker] Upgrade to torch 2.14/CUDA 13.0 and optimize FA2 build from source
Upgrade the flash-attn Docker image:
- Bump torch to 2.14.0, CUDA to cu130, torchcodec to 0.16.0
- Build FA2 (v2.8.3.post1) from source since Dao-AILab no longer
publishes wheels for torch>=2.9
Key build optimisations over the naive `pip install flash-attn`:
- ninja for parallel compilation
- force-reinstall wheel>=0.43 (Ubuntu 22.04 ships 0.37.1 which imports
pkg_resources removed in setuptools>=83/torch>=2.13)
- patch SKIP_CK_BUILD=True to skip ~1100 ROCm composable_kernel .cu
files that setup.py otherwise compiles unconditionally on NVIDIA
- init only csrc/cutlass submodule (headers only, ~1s vs full clone)
- FLASH_ATTN_CUDA_ARCHS='80' to target Ampere only (A10G/A100),
cutting compile time ~4x vs the default 80+90+100+120
- dynamic MAX_JOBS derived from available RAM (floor(RAM/2.8) capped at
nproc, split with NVCC_THREADS=4) to avoid OOM on CI runners
- patch C++17→C++20 required by torch>=2.14
FA3/FA4 are not installed: they require Hopper/Blackwell GPUs and our
CI runners use Ampere (A10G).
Validated: full Docker build completed in ~27 min on aws-general-8-plus
(32 vCPU, 123 GB RAM, MAX_JOBS=8).

* Address review comments and scope workflow to flash-attn image only
Dockerfile:
- Rename "Key optimisations" → "Key changes" and note wheel upgrade is a
correctness fix, not a speed optimisation (item 2)
- Add item 3: C++20 patch is required by torch>=2.14
- Note FLASH_ATTN_CUDA_ARCHS is the biggest speedup along with ninja (item 6)
- Add item 8: explain --allow-unsupported-compiler (CUDA 13.0 dropped GCC 11)
- Restore "FA2" in the skipping echo message
Workflow (temporary): scope push trigger to fix_flash_attn_docker_clean and
disable all jobs except flash-attn-ci-image via `if: false`
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* [Temporary] Scope flash-attn CI to branch and a few models
- build-docker-images.yml: remove fix_flash_attn_docker_clean branch trigger
(image build already pushed, no longer needed)
- self-scheduled-flash-attn-caller.yml: trigger on fix_flash_attn_docker_clean;
when on that branch, skip setup job and restrict model-ci to
llama/mistral/qwen2/gemma2/llava subdirs only
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* Fix subdirs format for split_model_tests.py (needs Python list literal)
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* Fix GHA expression syntax: use single-quoted strings with '' escaping
Double quotes are not valid string delimiters in GitHub Actions expressions.
Single quotes inside are escaped by doubling them.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* Revert temporary CI verification changes
Restore build-docker-images.yml and self-scheduled-flash-attn-caller.yml
to their intended state: only the torch 2.14/CUDA 13.0 version bump in
build-docker-images.yml; all debug if:false guards and branch triggers removed.

* Move CI to Python 3.11, with the version set in `.python-version`
- `.python-version` is the single source of the CI Python version.
- GitHub Actions workflows use `python-version-file: .python-version`.
- The CPU CI images now build on a shared `docker/ci-base.dockerfile`
via `docker/docker-bake.hcl`; the build workflows pass
`PYTHON_VERSION` from `.python-version`. Same for the doc-builder image.
- consistency image: `pypi-kenlm` doesn't build on 3.11, use `kenlm`
(needs cmake).
- `check_circleci_user` only runs shell, use `cimg/base:stable`.

* Rebuild the DeepSpeed CI image on a plain CUDA 12.6 base
The image was pinned to `PYTORCH=2.8.0` while torchaudio moved on. torchaudio is
in maintenance mode and its final 2.11.0 release no longer pins `torch`, so pip
resolved `torchaudio-2.11.0+cu126` next to `torch-2.8.0+cu126` and the mismatched
extension failed to load:
OSError: .../torchaudio/lib/_torchaudio.abi3.so: undefined symbol: torch_library_impl
That breaks `import transformers` through `audio_utils`, and DeepSpeed imports
transformers while generating its metadata, so the build ended in
`metadata-generation-failed`. The build has been red daily since at least
2026-09-04, and Daily CI reinstalls DeepSpeed inside the GPU VM where it hit the
same error during Setup -- which skipped every downstream DeepSpeed job,
`run_trainer_and_fsdp_gpu` included.
Bumping torch to the version `transformers-all-latest-gpu` uses puts it inside
torchaudio 2.11's supported range and needs no extra pinning. Move off
`nvcr.io/nvidia/pytorch:24.08-py3` onto a plain `nvidia/cuda` base like that image
uses, which drops everything that only existed to undo what the nvcr image
shipped: the `pandas<2`/`numpy<2` pin, uninstalling `transformer-engine`,
`torch-tensorrt`, `nvtx` and `apex`, and repairing `pydantic`. It also drops the
`hypothesis==5.35.1` that image preinstalled, which pytest could no longer load
once torch 2.13 pulled in a setuptools without `pkg_resources`.
Unlike the general test image this one stays on CUDA 12.x: DeepSpeed compiles its
own ops, and `get_default_compute_capabilities()` only knows about CUDA 11 and 12,
so on CUDA 13 it cross-compiles for `6.0;6.1;7.0` and nvcc rejects the lot. The
Dockerfile records this so the base can be moved forward once DeepSpeed catches
up. `libaio-dev`, `WORKDIR /workspace` and a narrowed `TORCH_CUDA_ARCH_LIST` are
kept on top of the general image's setup, all commented in place.
Also pull in the `sklearn` extra: the model zoo tests run the example scripts, which
compute metrics with scikit-learn and scipy. The general test image gets those via
`[dev]`, and the nvcr base used to preinstall them.
Also install `python-is-python3`: the model zoo tests execute DeepSpeed`s
`zero_to_fp32.py` directly, and its `#!/usr/bin/env python` shebang found nothing on
an Ubuntu base that only ships `python3`, so all 54 of those tests exited 127.
* Fix DeepSpeed Trainer tests against deepspeed>=0.19.6
`deepspeed>=0.19.6` rejects a non-positive `warmup_num_steps` in `WarmupLR`,
`WarmupDecayLR` and `WarmupCosineLR`, while older versions silently clamped it
to `max(2, warmup_num_steps)`. `trainer_config_finalize` fills the DeepSpeed
scheduler config with `args.get_warmup_steps()`, which is `0` for the default
`warmup_steps=0`/`warmup_ratio=0.0`, so every DeepSpeed Trainer run died with
`ValueError: warmup_num_steps must be a positive integer, got 0`.
Keep the auto-filled value positive. `1` is clamped to `2` by DeepSpeed just as
`0` used to be, so no-warmup runs behave exactly as before.
Also give `test_auto_batch_size_with_deepspeed` a rank environment. It builds a
`Trainer` in-process rather than under a launcher, and DeepSpeed refuses to
initialize without `LOCAL_RANK`, so it failed with an assertion from
`_do_args_sanity_check`. Every other in-process DeepSpeed Trainer test already
wraps itself in `mockenv_context(**dist_env_1_gpu)`.
* Give the grad accumulation grad-norm check its own tolerance
`test_gradient_accumulation_grad_norm_without_num_items_in_batch` compares grad
norms between a `batch_size=8, gas=1` baseline and an equivalent
`batch_size=4, gas=2` run. With `model_accepts_loss_kwargs=False` there is no
`num_items_in_batch`, so every micro-batch is mean-reduced over its own valid
label count -- and the fixture pads to `max_length=16` with pad labels masked to
`-100`, so those counts genuinely differ between samples. Regrouping the same
samples into smaller micro-batches therefore shifts both the loss and the grad
norm, which is why the loss already gets a looser tolerance here.
`DataParallel` splits every micro-batch again across replicas (8 -> 4+4 and
4 -> 2+2), regrouping them more finely still and pushing the grad norm ratio to
~1.11 against the hardcoded 0.1 delta. Give the grad-norm check the same
per-caller tolerance the loss check has and loosen it for this case only. A real
GAS leak shows a ratio near `gas_steps`, so 0.2 still catches it, and the other
callers keep the tight 0.1.
* Give the distributed test collator position_ids for Ulysses SP
`deepspeed>=0.19.6` requires `position_ids` in every batch under Ulysses sequence
parallelism, so that a token keeps its correct global position once the sequence
is sharded across ranks:
ValueError: Ulysses SP requires `position_ids` in every dataloader batch ...
Ensure your data collator includes position_ids in its output.
`DataCollatorForLanguageModeling` emits `input_ids`, `attention_mask` and
`labels` only, so `test_alst_ulysses_sp` died in `ulysses_sp.py`'s `refill()`
before training started. Wrap the collator and add `torch.arange(seq_len)` per
sample, which is what DeepSpeed documents for non-packed sequences and also what
the model derives internally when `position_ids` is absent -- so the non-SP half
of the comparison this test makes is unaffected.
* tweak the kernels dep
* Skip gpt_oss kernels-dependent tests without kernels
* OOM guards
* Make the CPU-RAM probe container-aware and guard host RAM in gpt-oss
`psutil.virtual_memory().total` reads the host `/proc/meminfo`, so inside a K8S pod it reports the
whole node (~750 GiB) and says nothing about the cgroup limit the OOM killer enforces. The
`CI_CPU_MEMORY_LIMIT_GB` patch in `conftest.py` only half-covers this: it deliberately caps psutil at
`limit * num_accelerators` (a `device_map="auto"` planning budget), which is 120 GiB on a 2-GPU runner
whose cgroup still kills at 60.
- add `get_cgroup_memory_limit_bytes()` (cgroup v2 `memory.max`, v1 `memory.limit_in_bytes`, with
their respective unlimited sentinels)
- add `get_cpu_ram_total_gib()`, taking the min of the cgroup limit, psutil, and the raw
`CI_CPU_MEMORY_LIMIT_GB`
- rebuild `require_large_cpu_ram` on it, and accept `@require_large_cpu_ram(memory=N)` as well as the
bare form, matching `require_torch_large_accelerator`. This also fixes its two existing users
(gemma2, longcat_flash), which were subject to the same host-vs-pod bug.
- guard `test_model_outputs_distributed` on host RAM too: `distributed_worker` loads with no
`device_map` and moves the model afterwards, so the whole checkpoint transits host RAM first --
that is the allocation that got the CI container SIGKILLed.
Also cite the exact weight footprints from `modeling_utils.get_total_byte_count` on a meta-device
model (38.96 GiB for 20b, 217.61 GiB for 120b) so the budgets are traceable rather than guessed.
* Address review: separate the measured CPU RAM limit from the CI budget
Follow-up to @ydshieh's review on #48118.
`get_cpu_ram_total_gib` took the min of three values, one of which was `CI_CPU_MEMORY_LIMIT_GB` read raw. That
variable is a *per-accelerator* budget, so on a 2-accelerator A10 runner it reads 60 GiB where the runner really
has 180 -- every guard on that runner would over-skip. Multiplying by the accelerator count (what `conftest.py`
already does when patching psutil) gets to 120, still not 180, because the budget is an allocation policy for
`device_map="auto"` rather than a measurement of the machine.
So split the two apart:
- prefer what can be measured -- the cgroup limit the OOM killer enforces, and the machine's physical RAM --
taking the smaller, since each is wrong on its own (no cgroup outside a container; physical RAM reports the
whole node inside a pod)
- fall back to the CI budget only when neither can answer, i.e. on an instance-sharing runner with no cgroup
limit of its own
- add `get_ci_cpu_memory_budget_gib` as the single source of truth for the per-accelerator arithmetic, and have
`conftest.py` use it instead of its own inline copy
- add `get_physical_cpu_ram_gib`, which reads past the `patch_psutil_cpu_memory` cap. Without this the fallback
above is unreachable in CI: conftest patches psutil at session start, so "physical RAM" would report the
planning budget back to us rather than the machine.
Return `inf` rather than 0 when nothing can answer at all -- no cgroup, no psutil, no CI budget. That is an
ordinary local setup, not a broken one, and 0 silently skipped every memory-guarded test. `require_large_cpu_ram`
loses its `is_psutil_available` early-return, now redundant; this also closes a gap where a container *without*
psutil ran the test blind instead of consulting its cgroup limit.
Also note in the docstrings that the 80 GiB default is "more than our 60 GiB GPU runners" rather than an estimate
of any model, and that ROCm reaches `get_accelerator_total_memory_gib` through the cuda branch (a HIP build
reports `torch_device == "cuda"`), since the existing comment read as though it were excluded.
Tests cover the resolution order in all four environments, including that the guard reads past the psutil cap.

* Fix flash-attn build failure caused by setuptools>=83 removing pkg_resources
torch 2.13.0 (released 2026-07-08) added an unconditional setuptools>=77.0.3
requirement. pip resolves this to setuptools 83.0.0, which removed pkg_resources.
The Ubuntu 22.04 system wheel (used during --no-build-isolation builds) still
imports pkg_resources, causing flash-attn to fail to build.
Fix: upgrade wheel to >=0.43 (which uses importlib.metadata instead) right
before flash-attn is installed.

* build
* check run
* Use if/else for flash-attn install to fail loudly on real errors
The old `... || echo` pattern silently swallowed all install failures
(including the setuptools/pkg_resources issue), causing the image to be
pushed without flash-attn installed. Use if/else to only skip gracefully
for the two expected cases (FLASH_ATTN=false, nightly torch), and let
any actual install failure correctly break the Docker build.

* Make exporter tests CPU-only (require_non_gpu) and fix executorch import on CPU
The ONNX/ExecuTorch export tests target CPU (executorch exports via xnnpack on
CPU); their deps live in the CPU torch-light CI image. Mark
test_torch_export/test_onnx_export/test_executorch_export with a new
require_non_gpu decorator so they run on the CPU image rather than the GPU
nightly (where executorch cannot be installed without clobbering the CUDA torch).
Also make the ExecuTorch CUDA backend import in exporter_executorch.py optional:
it pulls in `triton`, which CPU-only torch builds don't ship, so importing it
unconditionally broke collection of every model test on the CPU image. The
`cuda` backend now raises a clear error if requested without it; xnnpack (CPU)
export is unaffected.
* cpu markers
* don't fail on cpu build
* keep comment
* lower min torch version
* dev-ci
* Drop @slow from ExecuTorch export tests so they run in CPU PR CI
The executorch export tests are @require_non_gpu (CPU-only) and their deps now
live in the torch-light CI image. But @slow tests are only enabled on the GPU
slow lanes (self-comment-ci / self-scheduled, RUN_SLOW=yes) — never in the CPU
PR CI (tests_torch has no RUN_SLOW path). With @require_non_gpu they can't run
on those GPU lanes either, so they executed nowhere (verified: 0 passed / all
skipped as "test is slow" in PR #47201's run). Dropping @slow lets them run in
tests_torch on the torch-light image when the fetcher selects exporter/model
changes. torch.export / ONNX export tests keep @slow (they still run on the GPU
slow lanes).
* dev-ci

Fix nightly all-latest-gpu image: drop executorch, add torch smoke test
executorch is a CPU-only export dependency. In the GPU image its version
constraint (executorch 1.3.1 requires torch>=2.12) uninstalls the pinned cu126
torch and pulls a torch on a different CUDA/NCCL stack, breaking the whole image
with `undefined symbol: ncclCommResume` at `import torch` (nightly failures).
Remove executorch from the GPU image (it moves to the CPU torch-light image) and
add a build-time torch smoke test that fails the build immediately if a later
pip install clobbers the pinned CUDA torch. Keep onnxruntime-gpu for
GPU-accelerated ONNX export validation.
