Misaki Shioi 47244b0f30 Fix: Specifying 0 should cause an immediate timeout (#15641)
This change fixes a bug in which specifying 0 for timeout-related options (such as the `timeout` option of `Addrinfo.getaddrinfo`) incorrectly results in an infinite wait.

(This change overwrites https://github.com/ruby/ruby/pull/15626 .)

Misaki Shioi cdeb9c4d70 Fix timeout in Addrinfo.getaddrinfo to actually take effect (#13803)
[Bug #21506] Fix timeout in Addrinfo.getaddrinfo to actually take effect

This change fixes an issue where the timeout option in `Addrinfo.getaddrinfo` was not functioning as expected.

It also addresses a related issue where specifying `fast_fallback: false` with `resolv_timeout` for `Socket.tcp` and`TCPSocket.new` would have no effect.

The timeout option was originally introduced in:
https://github.com/ruby/ruby/commit/6382f5cc91ac9e36776bc854632d9a1237250da7

However, the value was noy used in current implementation:
https://github.com/ruby/ruby/blob/3f0e0d5c8bf9046aee7f262a3f9a7524d51aaf3e/ext/socket/raddrinfo.c#L1282-1308

Therefore, even if a timeout is specified and the duration elapses during name resolution, nothing happens. This is clearly not the intended behavior.

`Addrinfo.getaddrinfo` has been made interruptible as of Feature #19965.
This change uses that feature to interrupt name resolution when the specified timeout period elapses, raising a user-specified timeout error.
The timeout can be specified in milliseconds.

The same issue affects `Socket.tcp` and `TCPSocket.new` when `resolv_timeout` is set along with `fast_fallback: false`.
`resolv_timeout` was introduced in the following commits:
https://github.com/ruby/ruby/commit/6382f5cc91ac9e36776bc854632d9a1237250da7
https://github.com/ruby/ruby/commit/511fe23fa2bdf1f17faa91e0558be47b5bb62b2a

The reason is that with `fast_fallback: false`, these methods internally call the same `rsock_getaddrinfo()` as `Addrinfo.getaddrinfo`.
This change addresses that as well.

This change includes the following updates:
- Added an environment variable `RUBY_TCP_NO_FAST_FALLBACK` to control enabling/disabling fast_fallback
- Updated documentation and man pages
- Revised the implementation of Socket.tcp_fast_fallback= and Socket.tcp_fast_fallback, which previously performed dynamic name resolution of constants and variables. As a result, the following performance improvements were achieved:

Samuel WilliamsandLars Kanis ea8a7287e2 Add support for sockaddr_un on Windows. (#6513)
* Windows: Fix warning about undefined if_indextoname()

* Windows: Fix UNIXSocket on MINGW and make .pair more reliable

* Windows: Use nonblock=true for read tests with scheduler

* Windows: Move socket detection from File.socket? to File.stat

Add S_IFSOCK to Windows and interpret reparse points accordingly.
Enable tests that work now.

* Windows: Use wide-char functions to UNIXSocket

This fixes behaviour with non-ASCII characters.
It also fixes deletion of temporary UNIXSocket.pair files.

* Windows: Add UNIXSocket tests for specifics of Windows impl.

* Windows: fix VC build due to missing _snwprintf

Avoid usage of _snwprintf, since it fails linking ruby.dll like so:

  linking shared-library x64-vcruntime140-ruby320.dll
  x64-vcruntime140-ruby320.def : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol snwprintf
  x64-vcruntime140-ruby320.def : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol vsnwprintf_l

whereas linking miniruby.exe succeeds.

This patch uses snprintf on the UTF-8 string instead.

Also remove branch GetWindowsDirectoryW, since it doesn't work.

* Windows: Fix dangling symlink test failures

Kir Shatrov 2038cc6cab Make Socket.getaddrinfo interruptible (#2827)
Before, Socket.getaddrinfo was using a blocking getaddrinfo(3) call.
That didn't allow to wrap it into Timeout.timeout or interrupt the thread in any way.

Combined with the default 10 sec resolv timeout on many Unix systems, this can
have a very noticeable effect on production Ruby apps being not
resilient to DNS outages and timing out name resolution, and being unable to fail fast even
with Timeout.timeout.

Since we already have support for getaddrinfo_a(3), the async version
of getaddrinfo, we should be able to make Socket.getaddrinfo leverage that
when getaddrinfo_a version is available in the system (hence #ifdef
HAVE_GETADDRINFO_A).

normal 6a65f2b1e4 io + socket: make pipes and sockets nonblocking by default
All normal Ruby IO methods (IO#read, IO#gets, IO#write, ...) are
all capable of appearing to be "blocking" when presented with a
file description with the O_NONBLOCK flag set; so there is
little risk of incompatibility within Ruby-using programs.

The biggest compatibility risk is when spawning external
programs. As a result, stdin, stdout, and stderr are now always
made blocking before exec-family calls.

This change will make an event-oriented MJIT usable if it is
waiting on pipes on POSIX_like platforms.

It is ALSO necessary to take advantage of (proposed lightweight
concurrency (aka "auto-Fiber") or any similar proposal for
network concurrency: https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/13618

Named-pipe (FIFO) are NOT yet non-blocking by default since
they are rarely-used and may introduce compatibility problems
and extra syscall overhead for a common path.

Please revert this commit if there are problems and if I am afk
since I am afk a lot, lately.

akr b5c6fc8561 Deprecation document for gethostbyname,gethostbyaddr.
[Feature #13097]

I confirmed current ruby (Ruby 2.4 and trunk) uses
gethostbyname() and gethostbyaddr().

Socket.gethostbyname uses getaddrinfo() and gethostbyname().
Socket.gethostbyaddr uses gethostbyaddr().

Socket.gethostbyname uses gethostbyname() to obtain alias hostnames.

RFC 3493 defines getaddrinfo()/getnameinfo() and
describes the problems of gethostbyname()/gethostbyaddr().
The problems are difficult protocol handling and thread-unsafety.

Since Ruby has GVL, the thread-unsafety doesn't cause wrong result.
But it may block other threads until finishing DNS query.

Socket.gethostbyname has the protocol handling problem.
It returns only one address family:

```
% ruby -rpp -rsocket -e 'pp Socket.gethostbyname("www.wide.ad.jp")'
["www.wide.ad.jp",
 [],
 10,
 " \x01\x02\x00\r\xFF\xFF\xF1\x02\x16>\xFF\xFEKe\x1C",
 "\xCB\xB2\x89:"]
```

www.wide.ad.jp has one IPv6 address and one IPv4 address.
But Socket.gethostbyname returns only one address family, 10 (AF_INET6),
which is the address family of the first address.

Also, Socket.gethostbyname and Socket.gethostbyaddr uses
4-bytes binary IPv4 address and 16-bytes binary IPv6 address.
This is not usual in other socket API in Ruby.
(Most socket API uses binary sockaddr string or Addrinfo object)

I think Socket.gethostbyname and Socket.gethostbyaddr are too far
from recommendable API.

So, I added deprecation description for documents for them.

normal 528ff1b9f9 socket: avoid arg parsing in rsock_s_recvfrom_nonblock
* ext/socket/init.c (rsock_s_recvfrom_nonblock):
  avoid arg parsing with C API
  [ruby-core:71439] [Feature #11339]
* ext/socket/basicsocket.c (bsock_recv_nonblock):
  adjust for above change, make private
* ext/socket/socket.c (sock_recvfrom_nonblock): ditto
* ext/socket/udpsocket.c (udp_recvfrom_nonblock): ditto
* ext/socket/lib/socket.rb (BasicSocket#recv_nonblock):
  new wrapper for private method, move RDoc
  (Socket#recvfrom_nonblock): ditto
  (UDPSocket#recvfrom_nonblock): ditto

Note, not adding bm_recv_nonblock.rb to benchmark/ directory
since it is non-portable. It is only in this commit message.
