Implement PEP 798 comprehension unpacking (#9342)
* Support PEP 798 comprehension unpacking Extract the remaining Python 3.15 comprehension unpacking implementation from the integration branch. Use existing list/set/dict update operations and an explicit inner iterator loop for generator unpacking. Align the public DictComp AST representation and schema with CPython. Migrate test_unpack_ex and test_unparse with scripts/update_lib from CPython d220409a13b77de7a6c30abe16ea90db01528edc. Preserve existing Rust tests; add no duplicate regression tests or snippets. AI-assisted source extraction, canonical migration, and independent source review with OpenAI Codex. Runtime validation is not yet complete. Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version unavailable * Improve selected unpacking diagnostics and refresh canonical exception tests Normalize six supported comprehension-unpacking diagnostics using existing parser context. Restrict the dictionary-spread hint to its first entry to avoid changing unrelated diagnostics. Migrate the whole test_exceptions module from CPython d220409a13b77de7a6c30abe16ea90db01528edc with the existing updater, preserving only its two existing RustPython markers. Ruff sources and dependency pins are unchanged. Six focused check/build/strict Clippy gates passed. A paired 34-input compile-only comparison retains six canonical diagnostic improvements, with eight of fifteen canonical cases still differing; this is not full test_exceptions or CI validation. * Fix mapping-rest error locations and retire stale encoding xfail * Match remaining unpacking diagnostics without changing Ruff Use exact retained AST and error ownership to normalize the remaining CPython 3.15 unpacking diagnostics. Reparse only the owned call argument slice with the unchanged Ruff parser when its original recovery loses generator clauses. Validated all 30 canonical compile-only cases in exec and doctest-style single modes against CPython 3.15.0, plus finite surrounding controls. Targeted compiler Clippy and source-bound builds passed. Full CI is pending. Cspell alone was omitted with the maintainer’s explicit one-commit approval because its npm bootstrap downloads returned HTTP 403; all other applicable configured commit hooks ran. AI assistance: dot authored, reviewed, and validated the changes. The runtime does not expose its exact model version. Index the class body prefix range by the source text line (#9384)
compile_class_body passed firstlineno to source_line_start_range. When the AST carries an AstLocations table, firstlineno comes from the table, while source_line_start_range indexes the source text. A table line past the end of the text panicked in ruff_source_file's line index. compile_class_def now also computes the text line that the first-line span starts on and passes it to compile_class_body for the range. The location still uses firstlineno. Without a location table the two are the same line. Assisted-by: Claude |

Test native IR invariants and harden append-fold helper contract (#9370)
Retain direct IR coverage for constant-pool representations, malformed append-sequence rejection, and vacated instruction-slot metadata reuse. Reject non-unit terminal append depths at the private folding helper. Existing production callers already require depth one; this is defensive contract hardening, not a newly fixed reachable interpreter bug. Preserve the existing helper structure and all pre-existing tests. The three added native tests are unchanged from the Python 3.15 upgrade work. Validation: codegen check and strict Clippy with --tests, a --lib --no-run build, and exactly three bounded native IR tests (one pass, zero ignored each). No Python, parser, VM or lifecycle payload was executed. The symmetric SetAdd guard has no dedicated depth-two assertion. Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version unavailable |

Support signed numeric constants in match pattern ASTs (#9279)
Recognize numeric Expr::Constant values when validating signed literal patterns, alongside parser-produced NumberLiteral nodes. Python AST conversion uses the former representation. Accept unary plus as well as minus and fold signed real/imaginary and complex patterns consistently. Boolean and non-numeric constants remain excluded. Preserve the existing parser-produced literal path and do not change source grammar. Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model-version-unavailable |

Align duplicate-parameter diagnostics with Python 3.15 (#9287)
* Align duplicate-parameter diagnostics with Python 3.15 Preserve source names and locations in both symbol-table paths, and migrate the existing canonical codeop expectation through update_lib. Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex: model version unavailable * Sync positional-only duplicate-parameter expectations Migrate the full pinned CPython 3.15.0 test file through update_lib. Its only delta is six existing expected messages, completing the dependent canonical wording coverage. Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex: model version unavailable |

Preserve append sequences when constant folding declines (#9276)
Collect representable constants before replacing append-sequence instructions with NOPs. A valid LOAD_COMMON_CONSTANT may not have a ConstantData value, so returning false must leave the helper's instruction sequence unchanged. Cover list, set and ListToTuple tails with a direct native IR invariant. No change to normal constant-folding behavior or canonical Lib tests. Align lazy imports and f/t-string interpolation with Python 3.15 (#9179)
* Preserve interpolation source text and canonical metadata Source-only checkpoint; candidate validation and the existing annotation expectation reconciliation remain pending. Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version unavailable * Align existing annotation expectations with CPython metadata Update only the nine existing expected strings confirmed against pinned CPython 3.15, with explicit user approval. Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version unavailable * Preserve template metadata through compilation and interactive input Escape literal debug prefixes, retain None AST expression metadata internally, and continue incomplete triple-quoted t-strings in the existing shell. Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version unavailable * Classify normalized unclosed brackets as REPL line continuations Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version unavailable * Nest equivalent REPL parse-error alternatives for Clippy Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version unavailable * Remove fulfilled annotation migration lint workaround The canonical expected strings no longer trigger literal_string_with_formatting_args, so the previous lint expectation is obsolete. Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version unavailable * Complete lazy-import exception and traceback library closure Copy canonical traceback and legacy exception mappings with preserved RustPython guards. Copy explicit non-Python library assets by exact path so exception hierarchy data does not expand into the entire test package. Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version unavailable * Provide Python 3.15 traceback metadata for missing modules and attributes Preserve AttributeError context for missing class attribute deletion, matching type_update_dict. Expose canonical generated missing-stdlib messages through the native sysconfig modules without importing CPython build-specific disabled-module assumptions. Preserve explicit AST source positions through compilation (#9138)
* Preserve explicit AST column locations through code generation Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version unavailable * Remove obsolete location bindings after span migration Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version unavailable * Propagate inconsistent AST span provenance without panicking Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version unavailable * Preserve mapped positions when exporting optimized Pass nodes Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version unavailable * Consolidate AST location regressions and satisfy strict compiler lints Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version unavailable * Consolidate equivalent AST literal location cases Replace the six-way literal-only optimizer matrix with one optimized-AST round-trip, preserving all assertions. Keep the distinct normalized-range identity, explicit Pass provenance, and synthetic format-spec regressions. Validation: all four appended location cases passed using the verified final-f6a RustPython binary with unchanged native sources. Ran normal pre-commit hooks; no Cargo build or full cyclic snippet suite. Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version unavailable * Reuse Ruff source locations in AST conversion Replace redundant PySourceLocation, Row, and Column wrappers with the compiler-core re-export of Ruff SourceLocation. Use UTF-8 byte coordinates and retain the empty-source fallback. Share the normalized range conversion while preserving caller validation and signed semantic metadata. Validation so far: independent source and boundary review, rustfmt, and git diff --check. Runtime validation follows after the shared build target is released. Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version unavailable * Preserve the first AST preprocessing location error Share first-error recording between generated-node allocation and synthetic-pass coordinate overflow. Exercise both real compiler-state failure paths in both orders using one MAX_ID location entry. Validation: focused compiler-state regression, strict codegen all-target Clippy, unchanged full-source seals, rustfmt, and normal pre-commit hooks. No interpreter runtime or broad suite rerun for this error-only change. Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version unavailable |

Add BUILD_LIST_FROM_ARG opcode behind CompileOpts::build_list_from_arg (#9104)
Add Instruction::BuildListFromArg = 219 (stack effect: pop 1, push 2): pop the iterator, push an empty list whose capacity is the iterator's length hint, push the iterator back. A failing length hint is ignored unless it is SystemExit or KeyboardInterrupt. With CompileOpts::build_list_from_arg set, a list comprehension with one generator, no `if` and no `async for` emits it in place of BUILD_LIST 0 on the non-inlined path and in place of BUILD_LIST 0; SWAP 2 on the inlined path. The option defaults to false, so default output is unchanged. Assisted-by: Claude |

Take SyntaxError messages and ranges from the parser (#8983)
* Match CPython's SyntaxError range for unparenthesized `except` types
CPython's `invalid_except_stmt` rule raises the error only once the whole
clause has matched, and reports a range that starts at the first exception
type and ends at the `:` closing the clause, so it covers the `as NAME`
part as well:
invalid_except_stmt:
| 'except' a=expression ',' expressions 'as' NAME ':' {
RAISE_SYNTAX_ERROR_STARTING_FROM(a, "multiple exception types
must be parenthesized when using 'as'") }
The parser reports the exception types alone, so look up that `:` in the
source and widen the range to match. Only `as NAME` may follow the
exception types, which is why the first `:` after them is the one closing
the clause.
try:
pass
except A, B, C as e:
pass
CPython 3.14: ('x.py', 3, 8, 'except A, B, C as e:\n', 3, 20)
before: ('x.py', 3, 8, 'except A, B, C as e:\n', 3, 15)
Fixes #8496
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* Clarify that the `except` error range stops before the closing colon
`invalid_except_stmt_end` returns the exclusive end of the range, so the
column it yields is the one the `:` sits on even though the `:` is not part
of the range. The previous "ending at the `:`" wording read as if the colon
were included, which invites an off-by-one "fix".
Comments only; no behavior change.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
* Fix the `except ... as` error column for non-ASCII names and line joins
`invalid_except_stmt_end` recovers the end of CPython's range by scanning the
source, which has to redo by hand what CPython gets from its tokenizer:
- The column was the byte distance from the line start, but `end_offset` is a
character column. `except Ä, B as e:` reported 18 instead of 17. CPython
converts explicitly, in `_PyPegen_byte_offset_to_character_offset`.
- The colon scan already spans explicit line joins, but the `as` check ran on
the raw slice, so a `\` before `as` left the range unextended.
`except A, B \` + `as exc:` reported (3, 12) instead of (4, 7).
Add regression cases to `syntax_invalid.py` covering both, plus the whitespace,
`except*` and line-join placements that already worked. All values are verified
against CPython 3.14.

* Update the Ruff fork to 0.16.10
Point the rustpython-ruff_* dependencies at the 0.16.10-rustpython tag
of the RustPython Ruff fork and port to its AST changes:
`ExprCompare` stores all operands in `operands`, call arguments use
`ThinVec`, dict comprehension generators and f-string elements are boxed
slices, `FStringValue` iterates `FStringPartRef`, and `TokenKind::Name`
is now `TokenKind::Identifier`.
Assisted-by: Grok:grok-4.6
Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
* Drop the source scan for the `except ... as` error range
The parser now reports the unparenthesized exception types error with a
range ending at the `:` that closes the clause, so
`invalid_except_stmt_end` and the message match that widened the range
are removed.
Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
* Take parse error messages from the parser as they are
The Ruff fork now emits the final message texts, so `vm_new.rs` no
longer rewrites parse error messages by matching their text and no
longer lowercases the first character of every message.
`analyze_compile_error` keeps only the caret narrowing for starred
expressions and the line number in the unterminated string message.
The compiler matches the new lowercase texts for indented block and
mixed bytes literal errors.
The fork is referenced by revision until it is published.
Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
* Take starred and bytes literal error ranges from the parser
The Ruff fork now reports misplaced starred expressions at the `*` and
non-ASCII bytes literal errors over the whole literal. `vm_new.rs` drops
`narrow_caret` together with `SyntaxErrorInfo`, which only carried the
message after that, and the compiler drops `bytes_literal_span`.
Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
* Take indentation error kinds and positions from the parser
The Ruff fork now reports `TabError` and `TooDeepIndentation` as their
own lexer errors and places indentation and line continuation errors
itself. `vm_new.rs` picks TabError or IndentationError from the error
kind instead of scanning the source for mixed indentation, drops the
TabError message override, and sets the end offset of tokenizer errors
to 0 or -1 by kind. The compiler drops the line-end relocation of
unindent errors and the line continuation rewrite. `_tokenize` raises
TabError and depth errors for the token they replace, also for sources
containing tabs.
Remove expectedFailure from test_tokenize.test_max_indent and four
test_tabnanny tests.
Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
* Take unterminated string messages from the parser
The Ruff fork's unterminated string errors now include the detected
line and are reported at the start of the string. `vm_new.rs` drops its
message override for `UnclosedStringError`, and the shell continues a
line on an unterminated triple-quoted string by the error's
`triple_quoted` flag instead of reading the quotes from the source.
Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
* Take bracket errors and tokenizer error priority from the parser
Bump the ruff fork, which now reports unmatched, mismatched, unclosed
and too deeply nested brackets and decides whether a tokenizer error
replaces the parser's first error.
Remove the bracket, unterminated string and nesting depth source
scanners and `pre_parse_source_error`. A tokenizer error from the
parser now wins over source scanner diagnostics found after it. An
unclosed bracket is incomplete input only when the parser reports it
as such, and other tokenizer errors end where they start.
Remove the expected failure markers from test_unicode_identifiers
test_invalid and the `import ä £` doctest in test_syntax.
Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
* Take number literal, string prefix and non-printable errors from the parser
Bump the ruff fork, which now reports malformed number literals,
incompatible string prefixes and non-printable characters itself.
Remove the number literal, string prefix and non-printable character
source scanners and the override classes that ranked them. Leading zero
and string prefix errors keep their range instead of ending where they
start.
Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
* Take the missing indented block error from the parser
Bump the ruff fork, which now reports `ExpectedIndentedBlock` with the
clause and the line of its header keyword.
Remove the message rewrite that derived the clause and line from the
source. The VM chooses IndentationError or incomplete input by the
error variant instead of its message.
Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
* Take binding target errors from the parser
Bump the ruff fork, which now names the invalid expression in
assignment, augmented assignment, delete, `for`, `with`, import,
pattern and `except` target errors.
Remove the source scanners for those targets and the message rewrites
of `InvalidAssignmentTarget` and `InvalidNamedAssignmentTarget`.
Remove the expected failure markers from test_syntax doctests that now
pass.
Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
* Take parameter, argument, star, comma and dictionary errors from the parser
Bump the ruff fork to 36919b62fa. Remove the source scanners for type
parameters, parameter lists, star annotations, call arguments, def type
parameters, parenthesized groups, missing commas and dictionary items.
Set end_offset 0 for ExpectedColonAfterDictionaryKey. Remove 14
EXPECTED_FAILURE markers in test_syntax and test_unpack_ex.
Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
* Take expression errors from the parser
Bump the ruff fork to 4f922d2124. Remove the source scanners for
comprehensions, collection and condition assignments, expressions
between strings, named expression targets, missing `in` after for-loop
variables and statements in `if` expressions. Remove the now passing
expected failure markers in test_syntax and test_named_expressions.
Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
* Take statement errors from the parser
Bump the ruff fork to c7f6594ed6. Remove the source scanners for
standalone except, `import ... from`, `**_` mapping rests, `elif` after
`else` and mixed except handlers, and the post-parse scanners for call
arguments, match targets, yield after a comma and parenthesized star
imports.
Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
* Take string and f-string errors from the parser
Bump the ruff fork to 6b46d0dfc8. Remove the source scanners for
malformed `\N` escapes, f-string and t-string replacement fields, mixed
t-string literals and `print`/`exec` statements, and the override
plumbing they used. Drop the `f'{x'; '` case from the compiler test,
whose expected message differs from CPython 3.14.
Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
* Restore the bracket depth check and fix incomplete unclosed strings
Restore `pre_parse_source_error`, which rejects bracket nesting past 200
levels before parsing. The parser reports the same error but still
builds the full tree, which overflows the native stack when dropped.
Remove the VM's unclosed string scanner, which ignored the mode and
treated `'abc` in exec mode as incomplete input. The compiler's check
now skips escaped newlines.
Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
* Report multiple statements before later errors in single mode
In single mode, when the first statement is a simple statement, report
code after its line as multiple statements before any error found
later, at the newline token or the comment before it. This replaces the
multiple statements check on the parsed body and also applies to
`ast.parse(mode='single')`.
An unclosed string that follows an earlier syntax error is no longer
incomplete input. The bracket depth error range is now empty.
Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
* Update the Ruff fork for parser speed and starred annotations
Bump the ruff fork to 8b59b85344, which skips the tokenizer error pass
when parsing finds no errors, stops allocating for every identifier's
string prefix check, and reports `def f(*args: *b = ...)` as invalid
syntax.
Remove expected failure markers from test_code_module
test_indentation_error and test_sysexcepthook_indentation_error, and
from test_dictcomps test_illegal_assignment.
Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
* Use the published Ruff fork 0.16.10 crates
Switch the rustpython-ruff_* dependencies from the git revision to the
0.16.10 crates.io release, published from the same commit (8b59b85344).

ExceptionGroup fields, OSError use-init, and live f_lineno (#8738)
* Add ExceptionGroup fields and OSError use-init BaseExceptionGroup stores msg, excs, and excs_str; args keep the original sequence. OSError defers parse when a subclass overrides only __init__. characters_written can be deleted. Exception args/traceback/cause/context reject invalid setattr/delattr. UnicodeError.object is a deletable field. except* remainder projection copies traceback/context/cause. SyntaxError.__init__ clears omitted location attributes. Assisted-by: Grok:grok-4.6 * Fix OSError payload init and UnicodeError construction new_payload_exception now runs slot_new so BlockingIOError parses characters_written. new_exception falls back to invoke_exception for extra-payload types. Handler lookup still uses the raising instruction. Indentation errors outrank print/exec missing-parentheses. BOM-with-non-utf8, bytes literals, and global+nonlocal now report the same offsets as the parser/symtable. object.__dir__ keeps string keys; type.__type_params__ skips the getset wrapper stored on builtin types. Assisted-by: Grok:grok-4.6 * Unxfail syntax/import tests and bind jump locals IMPORT_NAME passes fromlist None instead of an empty tuple. Honor inline values, custom mro, and type lookup (#8729)
* Add inline values flags and special-method lookup lookup_maybe_method clears AttributeError from descr_get. slot_tp_richcompare treats a miss as NotImplemented. hackcheck rejects object.__setattr__ on types. Heap types with a managed dict and itemsize 0 get INLINE_VALUES; _testinternalcapi.has_inline_values reports the valid bit. super is a base type; subclass __get__ binds the instance. __classcell__/__qualname__ may share a name with a slot. Unset member access uses the type's fully qualified name. Assisted-by: Grok:grok-4.6 * Call custom mro and descr_get for type.__new__ type.mro() computes C3 from the current bases. A metaclass other than type supplies the MRO via mro(). super() compares obj.__class__ to the instance type. slot_tp_new looks up __new__ through descr_get. is_subtype walks the stored MRO without an identity shortcut. __slots__ names are sorted so __class__ assignment matches. Assisted-by: Grok:grok-4.6 * Expose _testinternalcapi recursion and rare events get_recursion_depth feeds test.support.infinite_recursion. Match CPython on code objects, ast, symtable and syntax error positions (#8580)
* Guard all/any/tuple(genexpr) calls when the generator is a coroutine
`maybe_optimize_function_call()` reserves a `skip_optimization` label for
every `name(genexpr)` call and, for `all`, `any` and `tuple`, emits an
identity guard against the builtin plus an inlined loop. The port skipped
both whenever the generator expression's symbol table was a coroutine, so
`all(await x for x in xs)` and `all(x async for x in xs)` compiled to a
plain call.
An `await` or an `async for` in the generator does not disqualify the
shape: the inlined `FOR_ITER` raises the same `TypeError` that calling the
builtin on an async generator raises, which is what
test_builtin test_builtin_call_async_genexpr_no_crash asserts.
This was the last code-level difference against CPython across `Lib/`:
comparing every file's code tree by structure, opcode and constant value
(qualnames aside, which moved in 3.14.3+, and set constants compared by
value rather than by hash order) now matches on 1720 of 1720 comparable
files, up from 1719.
Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5
* Name the ellipsis type `ellipsis`
`type(...).__name__`, its `__qualname__`, and `types.EllipsisType.__name__`
read `EllipsisType`.
Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5
* Align compiler front end and instruction positions with CPython
Reject a bare generator expression in a class header and a format spec
nested more than two deep. Both parse here; the reference grammar has no
rule for either, since a class header only takes `arguments` and the
tokenizer runs out of nesting levels at the third format spec.
Scan the interpolations a format spec carries inside another format spec,
so `f"{x:{y:{z}}}"` reaches `z` when building the symbol table.
Give every generic function's type params scope a `.defaults` slot,
whether or not the signature has any default, so `co_varnames` and
`co_nlocals` match. Classes and type aliases keep theirs empty.
Decide an unparenthesized sole generator argument by the parser's
`parenthesized` flag instead of scanning the source for the shape of its
element. `_sum((d := x - c) * d for x in data)` opens with a parenthesized
group the rest of the expression continues, which the scan read as the
generator's own parentheses and left the call's out of its range.
Drop empty f-string fragments unconditionally. A concatenation whose
fragments are all empty now loads its empty string at the whole
concatenation instead of at whichever fragments happened to be plain
string literals.
Keep a byte order mark in source handed over as text, and report it as an
invalid non-printable character. Reading a file to freeze strips it, as
the encoded-bytes path already did.
Carry the filename into the errors `compile(..., PyCF_ONLY_AST)` raises;
they reported `<unknown>` or an empty name.
Across `Lib/`, the 1729 files that compile on both sides now agree on
opcodes, constants, flags, variable names, names, and exception tables,
and on instruction positions in all but 7 files, where a compound
statement whose body ends in a trailing `;` ends one column short.
Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5
* Align ast module output with CPython
- Keep lone surrogates in string, f-string and t-string literal values by
reading such a literal from its source; the literal-value helpers move
out of `Compiler` into `rustpython_codegen` and `ConstantLiteral::Str`
holds `Wtf8Buf`.
- Give `{expr=}` interpolations their leading text as a Constant and
default their conversion to `repr`, in both f-strings and t-strings.
- Span folded consecutive literals from the first of them to the last.
- Take the `:` into a format spec's range only when the parser left it
out, instead of always widening by one.
- Report a node end that lands on a line start as that line, column 0.
- Give a generator expression written straight into a call's parentheses
the range of those parentheses, in the preprocess pass, replacing
codegen's source scan and `_ast`'s one-column adjustment.
- Drop the expectedFailure on test_ast_line_numbers_with_parentheses.
Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5
* Align symbol table output with CPython
- Register an import as `DEF_IMPORT` alone, and an annotated parameter as
a plain parameter, so `import x; global x` is accepted and annotated
parameters are not reported as annotated names.
- Record a `global` declaration in the module block as well, and resolve a
name a `global` in an enclosing scope covers as an implicit global, so a
class body reading such a name emits `LOAD_NAME`.
- Resolve a name bound nowhere as an implicit global instead of leaving
its scope unknown.
- Require a binding only for a name an explicit `nonlocal` declared;
a free variable that reached the scope any other way already resolved.
- Name a generator expression's block `genexpr`; the code object keeps
`<genexpr>`.
- Locate a `def`/`class` block at its keyword rather than at the first
decorator. `decorated_definition_range()` moves from `Compiler` to
`rustpython_codegen` for that.
- Carry a comprehension symbol's flags over when inlining it into a parent
entry that only holds a free variable propagated from a child.
- Leave `__conditional_annotations__` out of an annotation block's
symbols and have the compiler cook up the free variable, which places
it after the ones the symbol table supplies.
- Check `from __future__` placement while building the symbol table, and
give `symtable.symtable()` the same docstring stripping and future
feature validation the compiler does.
- Floor `co_stacksize` at 1.

* Locate the eval return and the interactive print like CPython
Leave `eval` mode's `RETURN_VALUE` without a location, so the exit block
is duplicated per reaching path and each copy carries the location of the
branch that jumps to it. `a and b` now ends with two returns as it does
in CPython, and `a if b else c` gives the first one the `a` it returns.
Emit an interactive `CALL_INTRINSIC_1(Print)` at the expression statement
rather than wherever the expression left the location, which differ for
`(a := 10)` and `f'{0:fz}'`.
Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5
* Give interactive mode the conditional annotations cell
`compile_program_single()` emitted the `__conditional_annotations__` set
and its name accesses but never added the cell that holds it, so a module
compiled in `single` mode was missing the `MAKE_CELL` and the cellvar that
the same source gets in `exec` mode.
Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5
* Give compiler-raised SyntaxErrors an end position
`CodegenError` and `SymbolTableError` now carry an `end_location`
alongside `location`, and `CompileError::python_end_location()` returns
it, so errors such as "'await' outside function" set `end_lineno` and
`end_offset` instead of leaving them None.
`SymbolTableBuilder::error_ranged()` builds both positions from a range,
replacing the inline `source_location()` calls at the error sites.
Drop the `expectedFailure` on
`test_exceptions.SyntaxErrorTests.test_file_source`, which now passes.
Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5
* Report parser diagnostics with CPython's wording
`InvalidAnnotatedAssignmentTarget` becomes "illegal target for
annotation", `UnexpectedExpressionToken` becomes plain "invalid syntax"
rather than prefixing the parser's text, and the list-recovery
diagnostics ("Expected an expression or a '}'" and its siblings) join the
two that already mapped to "invalid syntax".
Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5
* Punctuate the code object repr like CPython
`repr(code)` was missing the comma after the address and escaped the
filename through Rust's Debug formatting.
Drop the `expectedFailure` on the six `test_dis` tests that compare
disassembly text, which now pass.
Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5
* Match CPython's parser error positions
A syntax error the parser reports counts its columns in characters, so
`source_location()` converts with UTF-32 rather than UTF-8; an offset
inside a character walks back to where that character starts.
Spans the parser reported differently:
- an error between two tokens covered nothing, and now covers one
character, since the narrowest token still covers one
- a "was never closed" bracket ends at column 0
- an unterminated string literal ends where it starts
- "leading zeros in decimal integer literals" spans the run of zeros
- an exponent with no digits and no sign is blamed on the digit before
the exponent letter, which the tokenizer puts back
Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5
* codegen: seek to the finally body's own scopes before copying it
An early exit from a try block emits an extra copy of the finally body.
Nested scopes are handed out by position, and the cursors still sit inside
the try block's own run of scopes there, so the copy took those instead of
the ones the finally body opens: a generator expression got a sibling's
symbol table and raised "the symbol 'k' must be present in the symbol
table", or, where the sibling was a named scope, built a code object with
no `.0` argument that raised UnboundLocalError when it ran.
Seek the cursors to the first scope beginning on or after the finally
body's first line before compiling the copy. The existing restore then
leaves the try statement's own copies starting from the same place.

Align compiler futures, annotations, and symtable with CPython (#8550)
* Align compiler futures and annotations with CPython Handle Barry parsing consistently across AST, type-comment, REPL, and WASM paths. Preserve deferred annotation source and scope metadata, and make _symtable conversion cached and linear-time. Assisted-by: Codex:gpt-5.4 * Fix f-string debug ranges and update Barry/annotate test expectations Compute the debug f-string source range from the raw leading and trailing text instead of the comment-stripped text, so a comment inside a multi-line replacement field no longer shifts the emitted LOAD_CONST location. Restrict the obsolete-operator location shift to `<>` by also requiring a `>` at the reported offset; without it any `ExpectedExpression` that followed a `<` (`2 <;`) was reported one column to the left. Add `CodeFlags::FUTURE_MASK` and use it in builtins, the shell, and the WASM VM instead of repeating the eight-flag union, and collapse the duplicated Barry diagnostic sequences into `BarrySource::diagnostic`. Update the `__annotate__` disassembly snapshot to LOAD_FAST_BORROW and replace the RustPython-only `barry_as_FLUFL` co_flags assertion in extra_tests with the CPython-matching one. Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5 * Restore the annotated function in __annotate__ qualnames Signature annotation scopes are compiled in the scope enclosing the annotated function, so the function name has to be folded back into the qualname: `f.__annotate__`, `C.m.__annotate__`, `outer.<locals>.inner.__annotate__`. test_type_annotations test_annotate_qualname covers this. test_pyrepl test_future_barry_as_flufl now passes, so drop its expectedFailure marker. Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5 * Pass safepoints in the attached-thread interpreter tests `main_and_subinterpreter_run_sections_overlap` parked its workers on a condvar while attached, and `busy_main_interpreter_does_not_block_subinterpreter` looped over protocol calls that never reach a safepoint. An attached thread that never reaches a safepoint cannot be suspended, so a concurrent process-wide stop-the-world (from the gc test running in parallel) never completes and the already-stopped sibling interpreter stays stopped; the second worker then waits in `wait_while_suspended` until the 30s deadline. Both loops now call `vm.check_signals()` each iteration, and the condvar wait uses `wait_timeout` so the lock is released between safepoints. Reproduced on Linux (4 CPUs): the two tests with `--test-threads=2` failed 2/40 before and 0/40 after; the full `rustpython-vm` lib binary failed 1/30 before and 0/30 after. Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5 * Report the obsolete `<>` operator from one place `<>` was located twice: `BarrySource` recorded the token ranges it rewrote to `!=`, and `cpython_parse_diagnostic_override` separately peeked at the bytes around an `ExpectedExpression` location. Both produced "invalid syntax" spanning the whole operator. `prepare_barry_as_flufl_source` now records the operator ranges in the non-Barry case too -- by plain text search, since nothing is rewritten there -- so `BarrySource::invalid_legacy_operator` covers both, and the byte-peeking helper is gone. It also defers to an unclosed bracket earlier in the source, which the diagnostic chain it used to sit in did for it. A `<>` that starts a statement now spans both characters: the parser stops at the `<` rather than one character in, which the byte peek did not handle. Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5 * Drop a py object's payload before its class `PyInner` declares `typ` before `payload`, so `drop_in_place` dropped the class first and `PyAtomicRef::drop` left it null. A `PyWeak` payload is still linked into the weakref list of the object it points at until its own `Drop` unlinks it under the stripe lock, which happens after that. `WeakRefList::add` walks the same list looking for a proxy to reuse and reads `node.class()` off every node it passes, so it could dereference the null class of a node on its way out. `PyInner::dealloc` now runs the two destructors in the other order at all three of its exit paths, with a compile-time check that no other field has one. Reproduced by the new test in about 0.1s, as the panic CI hit in the c-api `weakrefobject::tests::new_proxy` run: panicked at crates/vm/src/object/ext.rs:312: unsafe precondition(s) violated: hint::unreachable_unchecked must never be reached Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5 |

Remove private comprehension flags (#8537)
* Remove the private assignment-expression marker Why: extend_namedexpr_scope() already propagates assignment-expression targets and records DEF_GLOBAL or DEF_NONLOCAL in comprehension scopes. ASSIGNED_IN_COMPREHENSION remained only for conflict checks. Its private bit overlaps CPython's packed LOCAL scope bit. Changes: - Register assignment-expression targets as ordinary assignments. - Detect later target conflicts from existing declaration flags. Assisted-by: Codex:gpt-5.6-sol * Remove the private comprehension iterator flag Why: ITER duplicates the DEF_LOCAL and DEF_COMP_ITER facts already recorded for comprehension targets. Its private bit also overlaps CPython's packed scope field. Changes: - Use those flags for rebinding checks and local restoration around inlined comprehensions. Assisted-by: Codex:gpt-5.6-sol * Preserve source names in named-expression diagnostics Why: Assignment-expression diagnostics exposed the mangled keys used for symbol-table lookup. CPython reports identifiers as written in source. Changes: - Use source names in both comprehension conflict diagnostics. - Enable test_named_expression_invalid_mangled_class_variables. unicode crate (#8211)
* Extract unicodedata core into rustpython-unicode crate
Move the vm-free Unicode character database access — the generated UCD 3.2.0 /
latest tables, their build-time generation, and the icu4x/unicode_names2 lookups
for category/bidirectional/combining/east_asian_width/mirrored/decomposition/
normalize/is_normalized/digit/decimal/numeric/name/lookup — into a new leaf crate
over char/CodePoint/&Wtf8. stdlib/unicodedata.rs keeps the UCD pyclass binding: it
extracts the code point, boxes results, and maps errors. The unicode data files,
build.rs table generation, and the icu_properties/icu_normalizer/unicode_names2
dependencies move out of stdlib.
Assisted-by: Claude
* Route str predicates, casefold, and printable through rustpython-unicode
Add classify/case/identifier modules to the shared crate over char/&str/&Wtf8:
isalpha/isalnum/isdecimal/isdigit/isnumeric/isspace/isprintable classification,
XID identifier predicates, and full-mapping casefold. vm/builtins/str.rs and
literal/char.rs now call these instead of icu_properties/icu_casemap directly.
String-level iteration with final-sigma handling (lower/upper/title/capitalize,
islower/isupper) stays in the runtime.
Assisted-by: Claude
* Route sre_engine char classes through rustpython-unicode
Add the regex module with the SRE character-class and case predicates
(is_word/is_space/is_digit, is_uni_* Unicode variants, ascii/locale/unicode case
folding). sre_engine/string.rs now forwards to it, keeping its public API and
behavior identical — including the ASCII-only is_uni_digit and the hardcoded
is_uni_space table.
Assisted-by: Claude
* Route \N{} name lookups through rustpython-unicode
codegen/string_parser.rs (\N{...} escapes) and common/encodings.rs (the
namereplace error handler) now resolve character names via rustpython-unicode
instead of depending on unicode_names2 directly, leaving the crate as the sole
owner of the name database.
Assisted-by: Claude
* Add differential Unicode sweep and shared-crate snippet test
tests/differential.rs sweeps the full 0..0x110000 range and compares each str
classification predicate against a committed CPython 3.14 reference dataset
(tests/data/cpython3.14_predicates.txt, produced by generate_reference.py). Code
points that differ only because the Rust std / icu4x build ships a later Unicode
release than CPython 3.14's 16.0.0 are recorded in
tests/data/version_skew_cpython3.14.txt, regenerable via
RUSTPYTHON_UNICODE_REGEN_SKEW=1; the regen refuses to record any
cpython=true/crate=false divergence, so only newly-assigned code points are
allowed. Any other divergence fails. Both data files use a run-length
`predicate start:end,...` encoding.
extra_tests/snippets/stdlib_unicode_shared.py exercises the routed surface end to
end (str predicates, casefold, identifiers, unicodedata, normalize, \N{}, and re
character classes) and passes identically on CPython 3.14 and RustPython.
Assisted-by: Claude
* Match regex \d to Unicode decimal digits
is_uni_digit previously matched only ASCII 0-9, so re's \d in Unicode mode
missed decimal digits like ٥ and ५. SRE_UNI_IS_DIGIT matches Py_UNICODE_ISDECIMAL
(category Nd), so route it through classify::is_decimal. Unmasks test_bug_6561 in
test_re and extends the shared-crate snippet with the Nd/Nl/No cases.
Assisted-by: Claude
* Replace shallow Unicode wrappers with re-exports
Address review feedback on the extraction.
Functions that only forwarded to the shared crate become `use ... as`
re-exports rather than hand-written wrappers:
- literal: is_printable is dropped; escape.rs calls
rustpython_unicode::classify::is_repr_printable directly.
- unicode::identifier::is_continue re-exports is_xid_continue.
- unicode::data::lookup_character re-exports unicode_names2::character.
- Drop the unused repr(u8) on DecompositionType.
The SRE character-class and case predicates move back into
sre_engine::string (their pre-extraction home) instead of living in a
unicode::regex module that only sre_engine and the vm _sre binding used;
is_uni_digit/is_uni_alnum still delegate to rustpython_unicode::classify.
engine.rs and _sre consume them from sre_engine::string again.
The unicode crate's tests move from a single root tests module in lib.rs
into per-module test submodules (case, classify, data, identifier,
normalize).
Assisted-by: Claude
* no-std
* Address review feedback: test module, dead variant, WTF-8 normalization
- differential.rs: move the sweep tests into a `mod tests` block and drop
the file-level allow of clippy::tests_outside_test_module and
std_instead_of_alloc; the test uses alloc collections instead.
- data.rs: remove the never-constructed DecompositionType::Canonical variant
and its allow(unused); compatibility decomposition never produces it and
canonical decomposition is handled through icu4x.
- normalize.rs: is_normalized now takes &Wtf8 and checks each UTF-8 run,
skipping lone surrogates, matching normalize's run-wise behavior.
- unicodedata.rs: pass as_wtf8() to is_normalized.

Align codegen passes and opcode metadata with CPython (#7987)
* Share marshal ref table between code object and its internals
read_marshal_bytes, _str, _str_vec, _name_tuple, and _const_tuple now
take a shared ref table and resolve TYPE_REF / register FLAG_REF
entries. deserialize_code is split into a public wrapper and an inner
function that receives the ref table; deserialize_value_depth opens a
fresh inner ref space when it hits Type::Code, mirroring CPython's
behaviour of putting the code object itself at ref slot 0. Nested code
objects inside const tuples reuse the surrounding code's ref space via
the new read_const_value helper.
* Align PYC magic number, FORMAT_VERSION, and header check with CPython 3.14
PYC_MAGIC_NUMBER changes from 2994 to 3627, matching CPython 3.14's
pyc_magic_number_token (0x0a0d0e2b). marshal FORMAT_VERSION drops from
5 to 4 (the encoder/marshal.version value; the decoder already accepts
both). check_pyc_magic_number_bytes now compares all four magic bytes
instead of the first two.
* Accept CPython-tagged .pyc as read-only bytecode source
SourceFileLoader.get_code now also looks for .pyc files using
_RP_FALLBACK_CACHE_TAGS (currently ('cpython-314',)) in addition to
sys.implementation.cache_tag. The matched .pyc is only used for
reading; recompilation still writes to the RustPython-tagged path, so
CPython's .pyc is never overwritten. Source-stat / hash / timestamp
validation logic is unchanged.
* Apply rustfmt to marshal helpers
* Marshal PySlice from format version 4 instead of 5
CPython's marshal supports TYPE_SLICE from format version 4 onwards
and that is the default version. Rejecting slice dumps below version
5 made marshal.dumps(slice(...)) fail with the default version and
broke test.test_marshal.SliceTestCase.test_slice.
* Revert "Accept CPython-tagged .pyc as read-only bytecode source"
Lib/importlib/_bootstrap_external.py is CPython's own code copied
verbatim; local patches here defeat compatibility tracking. The
cpython-XX cache_tag fallback needs to live on the RustPython side
(Rust code or sys.implementation.cache_tag policy), not as edits to
the imported standard library.
This reverts commit 1fc426d0fb5fcdb50d35cad13bbb43e8f6ce1c7f.
* Set marshal FORMAT_VERSION to 5 to match CPython 3.14.5
Py_MARSHAL_VERSION is 5 in CPython 3.14.5 (Include/marshal.h:16) and
TYPE_SLICE serialization rejects version < 5 (Python/marshal.c:720).
Restore the same threshold and constant so marshal.version and the
slice-marshal gate match CPython.
* Thread marshal recursion depth through nested code objects
Code objects embedded in const-tuples reset the depth budget on each
recursion, so a hostile or pathological marshal stream of code-in-tuple-
in-code can blow the stack despite MAX_MARSHAL_STACK_DEPTH. Pass the
current depth through deserialize_code_inner and read_marshal_const_tuple
and decrement at each code-object/tuple boundary.
Also route dict keys through deserialize_value_after_header so TYPE_CODE
keys decode instead of failing with BadType.
* align compiler to CPython
* Align codegen with CPython compile.c
Rename CFG helpers and accessors to the names used in CPython's
compile.c (basicblock_next_instr, basicblock_last_instr,
basicblock_append_instructions, bb_has_fallthrough, is_jump,
make_cfg_traversal_stack, mark_warm/mark_cold, etc.). Drop the unused
boolop-folding gate, mark_cpython_cfg_label_block helper, and
ComprehensionLoopControl::iter_range field.
Track an is_coroutine flag on SymbolTable, set in async def, await, and
async comprehensions, and propagate it through non-generator
comprehensions per symtable_handle_comprehension().
Mark SetupCleanup/SetupFinally/SetupWith as has_arg pseudo-ops, mark
ForIter as a terminator, and add has_arg/has_const on AnyInstruction.
Fix Instruction::stack_effect_jump to delegate to the opcode's
stack_effect_jump rather than stack_effect.

ncellvars, nextop, noffsets, nvars, swaptimize, untargeted to
.cspell.dict/cpython.txt for the new CFG/assembler code in
crates/codegen/src/ir.rs.
* Fix CI failures from bytecode-parity work
- clippy: drop redundant `test_` prefix on three test functions and
remove an unnecessary `u32` cast in basicblock_clear_reuses_cpython_spare_slots_in_offset_order
- insta: regenerate nested_double_async_with snapshot to match the new
CFG output that drops unreferenced labels after the redundant-NOP pass
- regrtest: drop `@expectedFailure` markers from test_func_args,
test_meth_args (test_compile), test_disassemble_with,
test_disassemble_try_finally (test_dis), and test_except_star
(test_monitoring) which now pass
* Resync generated opcode metadata
Empty conf.toml since WithExceptStart and Setup{Cleanup,Finally,With}
stack effects already match CPython, so the TODO override entries are
stale and only cause CI hook diffs.
Regenerate opcode_metadata.rs and drop the matching SetupCleanup/
SetupFinally/SetupWith assertions on PseudoOpcode::has_arg(); their
`HAS_ARG` flag comes from pseudo definitions in bytecodes.c that the
upstream analyzer does not propagate through PseudoInstruction.properties,
so the generated has_arg() excludes them. has_target() still covers
these block-push pseudos via is_block_push().
* Drop is_block_push has_arg invariant
The CPython invariant `assert(OPCODE_HAS_ARG(op) || !IS_BLOCK_PUSH(op))`
relies on SETUP_{FINALLY,CLEANUP,WITH} carrying `HAS_ARG_FLAG` in
CPython's metadata. The autogen tool reads pseudo-opcode properties from
target instructions and does not propagate the pseudo's own
HAS_ARG flag, so PseudoOpcode::has_arg() omits these three opcodes.
Drop the debug_assert that fired inside py_freeze proc-macro expansion.
* Auto-generate has_eval_break and route AnyInstruction has_arg/has_const via macro
Add fn_has_eval_break to generate_rs_opcode_metadata.py using CPython's
Properties.eval_breaker, removing the hand-written matches! body for
Opcode::has_eval_break and PseudoOpcode::has_eval_break.
Forward has_arg/has_const from Instruction and PseudoInstruction to
their opcode, so AnyInstruction can use either_real_pseudo! like the
other has_* accessors instead of an open-coded match.
